MIDLAND, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University women's basketball traveled to nearby Northwood University for a rare midweek Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference contest Tuesday in Midland, Mich.

The Cardinals, jumped out to a quick 13-point lead after the first and held a 37-30 lead at the break. SVSU held off a four-quarter rally by the Timberwolves to earn a 76-72 win.

The victory pushes the Cardinals to 3-4 overall and 3-4 in the GLIAC.

Up just three points with 30-seconds remaining, Tyler Scheid made a crucial layup on an assist from Victoria Stafford to put the Cardinals up five. SVSU hit 5-of-6 at the line in the closing seconds to secure the victory.

Five Cardinals finished in double figures, led by 17 points from Maddie Maloney, who was 7-of-7 at the free-throw line. Maddie Barrie finished with 16 points, while Scheid added 13 points and eight rebounds.

Tori DePerry recorded 13 points and seven rebounds off the bench for SVSU. Kaitlyn Zarycki continued to fill the stats sheet with 10 points, seven assists and five rebounds.

The Cardinals shot 27-of-61 from the field, 8-of-29 from deep and 14-of-17 from the line. SVSU recorded 14 assists, five steals, 36 rebounds and 11 turnovers.

Alana Nelson scored a game-high 20 points on 8-of-9 shooting to lead Northwood (4-3, 4-3 GLIAC).

SVSU returns home to host the University of Wisconsin-Parkside starting at 5 pm Friday at the James O'Neill Jr. Arena in University Center, Mich.
