Preview: Volleyball Set for Final Match of the Season against Northwood on Saturday

SAULT STE MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State University volleyball team will close out the 2021 season this weekend with a single road match against Northwood University. The Lakers will take on the Timberwolves at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 13 in Midland, Mich. in a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) match. 

The Lakers are coming off a tough road series against their U.P. rivals, Michigan Tech and Northern Michigan, last weekend. Lake Superior State fell to the Wildcats last Friday and dropped a match to the Huskies on the road on Saturday afternoon. The Lakers will look to end their season on a high note this weekend against the Timberwolves. 

Earlier this season, the Lakers and the Timberwolves met for a match in Sault Ste. Marie with Northwood recording a 3-0 win over the home team. 

Through 25 matches this season, the Lakers are led by senior Camdyn Odykirk and redshirt sophomore Taylor Fleming offensively as the pair ranks first and second in kills and kills per set. Odykirk leads the team in kills with 157 and ranks second in kills per set with 1.89 while Fleming leads the Lakers in kills per set with 2.20 and ranks second behind Odykirk in kills with 143. Junior Ally Gruber has had a strong season for the Lakers with 136 kills and a team-leading 18 service aces. 

Senior Halle Grulke's 440 assists lead the team this season. Grulke currently ranks eighth all-time in Laker history in career assists with 1602. 

Defensively, sophomore libero Emily Hagelthorn ranks first among her teammates in digs with 359 while Odykirk leads the Lakers with 55 total blocks this season. Hagelthorn ranks third in the GLIAC in digs per set this year with 4.27. 

Northwood University Timberwolves, Midland, Mich. 

Heading into the final match of the regular season, Northwood holds a 10-14 overall record and a 4-10 mark in GLIAC play. The Timberwolves enter the match against the Lakers on an 11-game losing streak and will be looking for their second victory against the Lakers this season. Last weekend, Northwood dropped a 3-0 match to Michigan Tech and fell to NMU in a five-set match. Senior outside hitter Grace Rekeweg leads her team with 213 kills (2.60 kills per set) while senior middle blocker Maya Ferland follows with a team-leading .322 hitting percentage (2.46 kills per set). Junior libero Lauren Bell's 300 digs leads the Timberwolves this season.
