Lakers Drop a Hard-Fought GLIAC Battle to Northwood at Home

SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The Lake Superior State men's basketball team dropped a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) battle to the Northwood University Timberwolves by a final score of 68-60 on Thursday, Feb. 6 in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. 

The first half ended with the Timberwolves holding a 34-29 lead over the Lakers. Nigel Colvin opened the game's scoring as he recorded the first four points with back-to-back layups for the Lakers. Northwood would tie the game at four but the Lakers would answer with a run of eight straight points to go up 12-4 at 15:27 of the half. 

In the next stretch of play, the conference foes exchanged three-pointers to set the score at 15-9 at the 12:13 mark of the first. Jackson Schrameyer would score on a dunk to give Lake State an eight point lead (17-9). Just over the midway point of the half, the Timberwolves would record back-to-back three-pointers to close the Lakers advantage to two points (17-15). With 7:32 remaining in the half, the Timberwolves grabbed the lead for the first time in the game when they went ahead 22-19. Northwood's offense was sparked in the late stages of the half to eventually build a double digit lead over the Lakers (31-21) with 4:04 left in the opening half. 

The Lakers were able to cut the deficit in half in the closing minutes thanks to a pair of free throws from Justin Fischer, a three-pointer from Brandon Allen and a last minute dunk by Ke'Montrece Collins. The two teams would close the half with the score at 34-29 in favor of the Timberwolves. 

Within the first two minutes of the second half, the Lakers were able to close the lead to two points as Collins and C.J. Robinson scored for the Lakers to make it a 36-34 game. The Lakers would regain the lead at 17:17 when Fischer made a layup to put the home team ahead by a point (38-37). 

Collins would then add four consecutive points in the game to push the Lakers lead back up to three points at 16:08 of the second half. With no scoring from either team in the next minute and a half of play, the Lakers would respond to the lull in action with a run of seven straight points to hold an eight point lead over the Timberwolves (49-41). 

The back-and-forth action would continue through the final ten minutes of the second half as the Timberwolves would work to cut the Lakers down to two points (51-49) before eventually tying the game at 53 with 7:20 left in regulation play. 

With just under five minutes left in the game, Collins added his second dunk of the night to put the Lakers back ahead by three points. In the next few plays, the Lakers and Timberwolves would tie the game before Northwood grabbed a 60-58 lead with 1:54 left in the game. Northwood would seal the win in the final minute of play, scoring eight points to take the game by a final score of 68-60.

Collins led the team with 13 points in the game while also posting six rebounds. Ashton Sherrell led the team in rebounds with nine.

The Lakers will be back at home on Saturday afternoon for a 3:00 p.m. game against the Saginaw Valley State Cardinals in the Bud Cooper Gymnasium. Following the contest, the Lakers will hold a special ceremony for Senior Day honoring the team's graduating class: Ke'Montrece Collins, Cody Ley, and Jackson Schrameyer
