Volleyball Unable to Close Out Ferris State on Sunday

The Warriors led 2-0 but the Bulldogs came back to win in five sets.

DETROIT -- For the fourth straight match, the Wayne State University volleyball program (7-3, 1-1 GLIAC) played a five-set contest on Sunday inside the Matthaei.  WSU fell to Ferris State (4-6, 2-0) as the Bulldogs won for the seventh consecutive time in the series.  The Warriors won the first two sets by scores of 25-18 and 26-24 before FSU forced a fifth set by winning the next two sets 25-14 and 26-24.  The fifth set went the way of the visitors by a tally of 15-11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Wayne State led 7-5 early in the first set but FSU would come back to take an 11-8 advantage.  A service ace by Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) pulled the Green & Gold within one, 11-10, and a Ferris State error tied the game at 11-11. A point by Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) followed by back-to-back spikes by Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) gave the home team a 16-13 advantage.  WSU won the race to 20 and led 20-15 after another point by Giroux.  FSU captured back-to-back points to trim the margin to three, 20-17.  The Warriors used a block from Maddie Morrison (Flushing, Mich.) and Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern)
to make it 23-17.  Another blocked from Shell and Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) made it 24-18 and a kill by Withun ended the set.

FSU led 6-4 to start the second set but WSU responded to take a 10-8 advantage.  VanderWal's kill made it 12-10 and a point by Giroux pushed the margin to 15-10, forcing the Bulldogs to take a timeout.  The timeout seemed to work as Ferris State would go on to take a 20-18 lead and then a 22-19 advantage.  FSU held onto a 23-21 lead before a block by VanderWal and Shell plus a kill from Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) tied the set at 23-23.  The Bulldogs won the next point but kills from Withun and VanderWal allowed WSU to take a 2-0 match lead.

The visitors from Big Rapids controlled the third set from the first whistle, leading 8-5, 14-8. 19-10 and eventually winning by a score of 25-14.

WSU started fast in the fourth set, leading 7-3 following a block from VanderWal and Giroux.  However, Ferris State would have an answer and take an 12-11 lead.  The momentum stayed with the Bulldogs as they would extend the Warrior deficit to 17-14.  A point from Morrison and a combo block by Withun and Shell evened the set at 20-20.  An ace by Maddy Benoit (Farmington, Mich. / Mercy) on the next serve gave WSU a 21-20 lead.  Ferris State won four of the next five points, pulling them within a point from forcing a fifth set.  The Warriors tied the set at 24-24 after a kill by Morrison and a spike by Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) but FSU would win 26-24.

The fifth set started with the Bulldogs leading 4-1 and then 7-4.  Points by VanderWal and Giroux brought the Green & Gold within two, 12-10.  Ferris State won three of the next four points to end the match.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
VanderWal led the way with 14 kills, while Giroux finished with 13.  Duffield tallied 34 assists, while Benoit had a match-high 20 digs.  Shell recorded eight total blocks.

ONE BIG THING
Duffield moved into second place all-time in assists passing Cydney Biessel (4,089) and Amy Horgan (4,097) on Sunday.  She currently has 4,105 career assists, which is a modern volleyball record. The program record belongs to Tracy Granger (1992-95) who recorded 5,136 helpers prior to the rally scoring era.
