Volleyball Takes Care of LSSU in Three Sets

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (9-5, 3-3 GLIAC) topped Lake Superior State (1-13, 0-6 GLIAC) on Friday night inside the Matthaei.  The sweep included scores of 25-14, 25-18 and 25-14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
A kill by Alex Withun (Troy, Mich. / Athens) and a service ace from Sam Palazzolo (Shelby Twp., Mich. / Utica Eisenhower) gave WSU a 7-4 lead early in the first set.  The Lakers trailed 10-8 before a 4-0 run from the Warriors gave the home team a 14-8 advantage.  LSSU kept it close at 17-14 but the Green & Gold ended the set on an 8-9 run to win 25-14.  Halle Shell (Port Huron, Mich. / Port Huron Northern) tallied three kills down the stretch.

The Lakers held onto a 7-5 lead to start the second set.  A point from Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) before consecutive errors by the visitors gave WSU a 9-8 advantage. Points from Kayla Giroux (Flat Rock, Mich.) and Shell pushed Wayne State in front 14-12.  The home margin grew to 20-14 after a block by Giroux and Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.).  The set ended on another kill from Giroux, giving WSU a 25-18 victory.

Chloe Clark (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) gave the Green & Gold a 4-1 lead to begin the third set.  A block by Duffield and Jenna Kray (Westerville, Ohio / Worthington Christian) made it 9-4 and another block allowed the Warriors to lead 13-5.  Another point from Clark gave the Warriors an 18-10 lead and she posted another point to make it 22-10.  The Warriors finished the sweep by winning 25-13.
