Late goal lifts No. 1 Lakers past Cardinals

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. - The Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer dropped a heartbreaking game to No. 1 Grand Valley State University on Friday at Braddock Field. The Lakers used three second-half goals to defeat the Cardinals 3-2. SVSU falls to 6-2-2 overall and 3-2-1 in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play.

SVSU found the back of the net first when Ashley Myall passed a ball upfield to Stephanie Strong. The freshman sent a shot past the goalkeeper off the right post and in, making it 1-0 Cardinals in the 31st minute. 

The Lakers answered early in the second half when Greta Deloach scored in the 46th minute to tie the score at one. Later in the second half, GVSU found the back of the net again when Cecilia Steinwascher found Kennedy Bearden in the 63rd minute to make it 2-1.

The Cardinals tied the score in the 84th minute when Gabby Green sent a perfect cross into the box for SVSU, finding Reegan Kingpavong, who headed it home. With 1:19 remaining in the game, the Lakers found the game-winner once again when Taylor Reid scored on a loose ball in the box. 

The Cardinals outshot the Lakers 13-12. Olivia Argeros made two saves in net for SVSU.

SVSU hosts Davenport University at 1 pm next Friday at Braddock Field.
