Anthes' strong outing lifts SVSU to split with Ashland

ASHLAND, Ohio – The Saginaw Valley State University baseball team continued its weekend series with Ashland University with a Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday in Ashland, Ohio.

Kendall Anthes continued his strong pitching of late, tossing a shutout against the Eagles to win game one 6-0. Ashland jumped out to an early lead in game two and held on for a 9-5 victory in the finale to split the doubleheader, moving SVSU to 17-14 overall and 12-11 in the GLIAC.

The Cardinals got going in game one in the first with three runs. Martin Money doubled home the game's first run, while SVSU took advantage of an Ashland error and wild pitch to add two more.

The score remained 3-0 until the sixth when Colin Cornwell doubled the Cardinal lead to six with a three-run home run. Cornwell finished with two hits, three RBIs, two runs, and two walks, while Tucker Roe added two hits.

The run support was more than enough for Anthes (1-1), who pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits, two walks, and struck out two in the win.

After Hayden Jatczak put the Cardinals up 1-0 in game two with an RBI single in the top of the first, Ashland responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Jatczak and Todd Paperd each singled home a run in the third to tie the score at 3-3, but the Eagles scored six unanswered to pull away.

Starter Nolan Knauf was charged with the loss, allowing seven runs, six earned, on five hits, walking five, and striking out two in 2.2 innings.

The series concludes with one 9-inning game set to start at 1 pm Sunday.
