SVSU holds off Northwood for 62-56 win

UNIVERSITY CENTER, Mich. – The Saginaw Valley State University men's basketball team started fast and held off a second-half rally by rival Northwood University to earn a midweek conference win Tuesday at the James E. O'Neill Jr. Arena.

The Cardinals used 11 first-half points off the bench from James Toohey to build a 38-19 lead at the break. The Timberwolves climbed back throughout the second half and tied the game with 90 seconds to play.

SVSU hit crucial free throws and made several key stops in the closing moments to secure a  62-56 win, snapping a three-game slide. The win pushes the Cardinals to 2-5 overall and 2-5 in the Great Lakes Collegiate Athletic Conference.

Toohey finished with a season-best 15 points, including three 3-pointers. Delano Smith was 7-of-7 at the free-throw line and closed the game with 13 points, adding six rebounds and three steals.

The Cardinals shot 18-of-50 from the field, 6-of-14 from deep and 20-of-27 from the line. SVSU recorded 10 assists, seven steals and 12 turnovers. Both teams finished with 32 rebounds.

Evan Lowden led the Northwood (4-3, 4-1 GLIAC) comeback, finishing with 19 points and eight rebounds off the bench. Trevor Davis and Jack Ammerman each added 11 points for the Timberwolves.

The Cardinals hit the road for two games at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside starting at 4 pm Friday in Kenosha, Wis.
