Women's Tennis Tallies 6-1 Win Against Ashland

The Warriors remain undefeated in the GLIAC.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's tennis team (5-0 overall, 5-0 GLIAC) notched a 6-1 victory over Ashland (8-3 overall, 3-2 GLIAC) at home on Saturday.

DOUBLES RESULTS

At the first flight, sophomore Laura Cazacu (London, England) and junior Linda Liong (Tanjung Kidurong, Malaysia) blanked Anna Hart and Brianna Brdicka, 6-0.

Junior Khadija Da-Silva (Burlington, Ont.) and freshman Sabrina Laynes (Saginaw, Mich. / Heritage) were next off the courts after winning their No. 3 doubles match 6-2 vs. Hazuki Ogino and Zoe Rosu.

At No. 2 doubles, juniors Teodora Radu (Ramnicu Valcea, Romania) and Tanja Skalda (Prien Am Ciemsee, Germany) edged Gabriella Hudec and Camille Ringot, 6-2.

SINGLES RESULTS

Da-Silva was first off the courts after nearly sweeping Rosu at No. 3 singles (6-0, 6-1).

At No. 2 singles, Liong put it away after a close first set vs. Brdicka (7-5, 6-1).

Sophomore Carla Jewell (Hobart, Ind.) secured the win for the Green and Gold after topping Ogino at No. 6 singles (6-2, 6-0).

Cazacu notched a victory over Hudec at No. 1 singles (6-2, 6-3).

Laynes edged Hart in their No. 5 singles match (6-0, 6-4).

At No. 4 singles, Skalda retired due to injury in her match against Ringot.

"We had another day of great team effort," commented head coach Sheila Snyder.  "Everyone stepped up on a cold and windy morning.  I really like the progress that I have seen thus far in the entire team.  It is nice to see our practice carrying over to the matches and I am very happy with our continued improvement."

The Warriors will travel to Northwood on Saturday, Oct. 12, for a 1:00 p.m. match.
