FSU Plays High Level Tennis In Exhibition Setback At NCAA D1 Western Michigan

Big Rapids, Mich. - The defending Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Champion Ferris State University men's tennis squad opened spring action on Saturday (Jan. 15), battling NCAA Division I Western Michigan to the finish in a 6-1 exhibition setback in Kalamazoo.

The Bulldogs played a strong contest, but could not overcome the Broncos, dropping the doubles round before WMU swept the singles action.

"I am beyond impressed with the fight and determination we showed today," said FSU head coach Mark Doren. "In my four years, this was the highest level of tennis I've seen from top to bottom.

"A special shoutout to our number one singles player and captain Mathis Guerre with a hard-fought close setback against an extremely talented player," he added. "Also, to Jan Koupil for playing an awesome back and forth match. He took control before his opponent had to retire with injuries."

Koupil was a 2-6, 6-4, 2-1 winner at the fourth singles spot while Guerre suffered a setback in three sets. FSU's Ayush Deswal had to leave his match at six singles due to injury.

In doubles action, the tandem of Deswal and Yannic Alexander Mader earned a win by a 6-4 count at the third flight.

"All in all today, it was a great day of tennis and we can't wait to get back on the court again," said Doren.

The Bulldogs open regular-season action on the road at Findlay on Saturday, Feb. 12. Match time is set for 1 p.m. (ET) in Findlay, Ohio.
