Spartans Sweep Davenport in Monday Doubleheader
TAMPA, Fla. – The University of Tampa softball team swept Davenport University in a late afternoon doubleheader. The Spartans have won eight of the last 10 games, including four of the last five at Naimoli Family Field.
INSIDE THE MATCHUP (Game One):

HOW IT HAPPENED:
BOT 3RD | Mackenzie Allen, making her first start of the season, led off the inning with a base-knock to left field. Allen advanced to second on her second stolen base of the year. Corynn Miner, the Spartans' starting pitcher, lasered a single to left field and Allen scored on the two-out base hit. Miner logged her team-leading tenth RBI of the season. || UT 1, DU 0
BOT 5TH | The leadoff hitter in the lineup, Stephanie Balmer, reached on a free-pass with one out. Balmer registered her second stolen base of the season to move into scoring position. The sophomore shortstop advanced to third on a passed ball. The Spartans extended their lead with a base hit up the middle from Cristina Clauberg. || UT 2, DU 0
BOT 6TH | Bailey Phillips walked to lead off and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Lexie Chevalier. Anyssa Grant pinch-ran for Phillips and moved to third on an infield single for Emalee Jansen. With runners at the corners, Emily Proffitt reached on a fielders choice up the middle but increased the lead for UT. || UT 3, DU 0
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Corynn Miner tossed her second consecutive complete game shutout; the right-hander allowed four hits, no walks and struck out 10 batters.
- Miner, SSC Pitcher of the Week, has tossed a complete game shutout in three of the last four starts, including a 17-inning affair against Palm Beach Atlantic (2/14).
- Lexie Chevalier made her first collegiate start behind the plate as the four-year starter, Maddie Farrell, did not play.
- In the seventh inning, Chevalier gunned down a base runner for the first time in her career.
- For the first time this season, the Spartans stole multiple bases in the same game.
- Seven of Tampa's starters registered a base hit as Emalee Jansen led the way with two hits.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Miner earned her seventh win of the year as she leads the SSC with 70 strikeouts and ranks second in the SSC with 0.61 ERA.
- Miner has logged double-digit strikeouts in four of her last five starts.
- In the last two games, Balmer's clubbed three doubles. The leadoff hitter has recorded a base knock in six of the last seven games, including three multi-hit performances.
- The Spartans blanked their opponent for the sixth time in 15 games.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
TOP 1ST | Davenport's Gabby Palazzolo reached on a base hit to right field. Palazzolo stole second and scored on an RBI single from Rachel Griffin. Griffin leads the team with five RBI through five games. || DU 1, UT 0
BOT 1ST | Stephanie Balmer reached base on an error by the Panthers' shortstop Briana Allen. Balmer advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Cristina Clauberg. After a passed ball moved Balmer to third, Mariah Galhouse hit a screaming groundball at Allen, who committed her second error of the inning. The two errors from Davenport gave Tampa their first run of the game and evened the score. || UT 1, DU 1
BOT 2ND | To begin the inning, Lexie Chevalier sent a frozen rope to the left field warning track for a stand up double. Chevalier advanced to third on a wild pitch. With no outs, Emalee Jansen blooped an RBI single into left field to give Tampa a one-run lead. || UT 2, DU 1
TOP 3RD | Kennedy Crawford singled to lead off the third inning. Crawford scored from first base on Palazzolo's first triple of the year. Additionally, the RBI extra-base hit was the first run driven in by Palazzolo. || UT 2, DU 2
BOT 4TH | Bailey Phillips led off the inning with a hit-by-pitch. Phillips advanced into scoring position on sacrifice from Chevalier. With one out, Mackenzie Allen pinch-ran for Phillips. Jansen followed up with a flare down the left field line. Sam Kaye logged her second at-bat of the year and drove the offering up the middle for an RBI single. Avery Perkins laid down a bunt for an infield single to load the bases. Balmer used a sacrifice fly to give the Spartans their second lead of the game. With two runners on, Clauberg lasered a two-run double to left-center field. With two outs, Corynn Miner drove in her team-leading 11th RBI of the year with a base hit to center. || UT 7, DU 2
TOP 5TH | Palazzolo reached base for the third time in the game with a single to right field. Alexa Flores and Griffin registered back-to-back hits for the Panthers to load the bases. The Spartans brought Jodi Handler into the circle to pitch. With the bases juiced, Alexis Koza walked and drove in a run for Davenport. With one out and the bases-loaded, Allen skied a sacrifice fly into center field to drive in the fourth run of the game for DU. || UT 7, DU 4
TOP 6TH | Hayley O'Mara popped up to left field, however, O'Mara reached on an error by Spartans' left fielder Mariah Galhouse. After Crawford walked, Selene Pauley loaded the bases on an error from Balmer. Palazzolo tacked on another run for Davenport with an RBI groundout. || UT 7, DU 5
BOT 6TH | Kaye led off with a walk and advanced to second on an infield single from Perkins. Balmer implemented a sacrifice bunt to move the runners into scoring position. Clauberg cleared the bases for the second time in the contest with a two-run triple over the left fielder's head. Miner extended the lead for Tampa with a base hit to center field. After a single from Galhouse, Alexa Russo pinch-hit and drove a fly ball to right field for a sacrifice fly. || UT 11, DU 5
INSIDE THE STATS:
- Mariah Galhouse made her seventh start of the year as the freshman allowed four runs on eight hits and struck out four.
- Corynn Miner came into relief for the second time this season; the red-shirt junior recorded five outs, struck out three and allowed no hits.
- Cristina Clauberg notched a career-high with four RBI in the contest.
- Clauberg tied her season-high with two hits in three at-bats. The red-shirt senior roped two extra-base hits in the game, including her first career triple.
- Jansen logged her fourth RBI of the year to give Tampa their first lead of the game.
- Bailey Phillips leads the team with six hit-by-pitches. In 2019, Phillips led the team as she was plunked 12 times throughout the year.
- Four Spartans logged multiple hits, including Avery Perkins who notched her first career base hit.
- Davenport's Gabby Palazzolo went 3-for-4 with two RBI, reaching base in her first three at-bats and driving in a run during her fourth at-bat.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
- Tampa set a new season-high with 11 runs scored; the most runs scored since March 30, 2018.
- Miner has at least one hit in 10 of the last 11 games after tonight's multi-hit performance.
- Jansen registered multiple hits for the second consecutive game.
- In two at-bats this season for Sam Kaye, the senior has driven in two runs as she homered in her first at-bat. Additionally, the lefty has a perfect 1.000 BA/OBP as she walked to lead off the sixth inning.
- The Spartans have recorded two doubles in three straight games.
