LEBANON, Ill. - Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse (6-4, 3-3 GLIAC) had its five game road winning streak snapped 11-10 at McKendree (3-8, 2-4 GLIAC) on Friday evening at Leemon Field. The loss is also Concordia's first road loss of 2018, opening the year a perfect 5-0 in away games.
Concordia closes out a four game road swing on Sunday with an 11 a.m. (CT) start at #15 Indianapolis (8-3, 4-2 GLIAC). The road swing started last week at Davenport in Grand Rapids, Michigan and concludes with a three game trip in a five day span that covers three states: Michigan's upper peninsula, today's game in suburban St. Louis on the Illinois side of the metro area and Sunday's game in Indiana.
Tonight's game was controlled by Concordia for most of the contest as CSP led for nearly 23 minutes of the first half and held the lead for the first 12:29 of the second for a cumulative lead of 35:25.
Additionally, the game was tied three times for a total of 7:01 of play and McKendree didn't take its first lead until 10-9 at 14:54 of the second half as part of a game-changing 5-0 run that turned a 9-6 Concordia lead with 21:44 to play into an 11-9 McKendree lead with 12:35 to go. The five McKendree goals were scored in a stretch of 6:16 of play (11:09 to 17:25).
Concordia was able to build a pair of three goal leads in the game, 7-4 at 27:41 of the first half as the Bears carried the three goal lead into the break and for a total of 5:43 of clock time, and again at 9-6 at 8:16 in the second half which was carried for nearly three minutes.
In the last 12:35, Concordia was able to scratch out a goal as redshirt freshman
Katie Moynihan scored her first career hat trick at 22:31. The Moynihan goal made it 11-10 with just under seven and a half minutes to play in the contest, plenty of time for a game-tying rally.
But the Bears would get just one shot the rest of the way, a shot on goal by freshman
Raelyn Korinek that was saved by Bearcat goalie Collin Patton. With the one goal deficit, Concordia committed four turnovers and four fouls down the stretch and converted two of its four clears during the same duration.
But sophomore goalie
Katie Lottsfeldt and the defense helped keep the slim deficit intact at one, with Lottsfeldt making a pair of saves. She finished the game playing all 60 minutes in net, making 14 saves with seven in each half. She also had seven ground balls and three caused turnovers in her typical disruptive play in and around the circle.
Lottsfeldt's counterpart, Patton, finished with just five saves by comparison although four of the five came in the second half as she allowed three goals after the break compared to seven CSP first half goals.
While Moynihan led the team with a three goal game, sophomores
Alina Boyce and
Maddie Hentges also had three point performances with a goal and two assists apiece. Korinek and sophomore
Kailey Heinl each had two goal games and sophomore
Kaci Reid had a pair of assists.
Sophomore
Tia Zachman was solid on defense with six ground balls while Heinl provided a strong day in the midfield with five draw controls, two ground balls and a pair of caused turnovers to go with her two goal game.
McKendree was led by the five point output from Paige Salthouse (2g, 3a) as four Bearcats had two goal games.
Typically a strength of the Golden Bears, CSP faced a -13 margin in ground balls in the game (20-33).
