Men's Tennis Suffers 5-2 Loss at #33-Embry-Riddle

Wayne State will play its final match on the Spring Break trip on Tuesday at Barry.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- The eighth-ranked Wayne State University men's tennis team (6-7 overall) faced #33-Embry-Riddle (6-2 overall) and suffered a 5-2 setback to the Eagles on Sunday afternoon at the Crotty Tennis Complex.

The Warriors were playing the second match of a back-to-back set - their second of the Spring Break trip throughout Florida.  WSU fell 4-1 to #6-Flagler on Saturday at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla.

DOUBLES
ERAU earned wins at all three doubles spots to garner the first point of the contest.  Below were the results of the three flights.

#1 - Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) and Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany), ranked fourth in the country, dropped a 6-4 decision to Joshua Nuyts and Michele Iftimie.
#2 - Fifth-ranked Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) and Dom Spicer (London, England) lost 6-3 to Caelan Potts and Fernando Alonso.
#3 - Benjamin Hill (Düren, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) and Joe Steele (Beverly Hills, Mich. / U. of Detroit Jesuit) fell 6-0 vs. Alvaro Diaz Rodrigo and Safar Rasulov.

SINGLES
WSU won two singles matches, but it was not enough to overcome its deficit on Sunday.

Grey was victorious for the second straight match at the first flight, as the No. 13-ranked singles player earned a 6-4, 6-4 win over Rasulov.

The other member of the Green and Gold to triumph was Spicer at the No. 3 spot, as he downed Alonso by scores of 6-4 and 6-2.

Drenth, ranked No. 18 nationally, faced No. 25-ranked Nuyts and lost 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 2 position, while Hill battled with Iftimie at the fourth position and was defeated 6-3, 6-2.

Playing in his second singles match of the spring season was Steele at the fifth flight, after being at the sixth spot in WSU's win over Sacred Heart on March 6.  However, he lost 6-1, 7-5 vs. Potts.

Seeing action in singles was Emil Mikkelsen (Soenderborg, Denmark), but he was dropped by results of 6-4 and 6-2 to Diaz Rodrigo, who came into the contest ranked 70th in Division II.

UP NEXT
It does not get any easier for Wayne State, as the squad will finish its five match, seven-day Spring Break trip across Florida with a date against Barry.  The Buccaneers are ranked fifth in the nation and defeated the Warriors 4-3 on February 16 as part of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's (ITA) National Indoor Championship.  Action from Miami Shores, Fla., and Buccaneer Tennis Center is scheduled for a 10 a.m. start.
