Cardinals pick up first win of 2022, top Quincy 2-0

QUINCY, Ill. – The No. 24 Saginaw Valley State University women's soccer team picked up its first win of the season on the road at Quincy University on Sunday.

The Cardinals got goals from Solana Kelly and Jessie Falloon, while holding Quincy off the board for the 2-0 victory. The win is the first for new head coach Tyler Channell and is the second consecutive shutout for SVSU to start the season with a record of 1-0-1.

Inside the Box Score:

  • The game remained scoreless until the 36th minute when the Cardinals got on the board with the first goal of the season for the team and for Solana Kelly.
  • Shortly after the teams returned to the field for the second half, the Cardinals were able to double their advantage.
  • Jessie Falloon scored the first goal of her Cardinal career on an assist from Stephanie Strong in the 48th minute.
  • The SVSU defense held up the rest of the way and has started the season with 180 minutes of consecutive shutout play.
  • Lainey Garbarz (1-0-0) got the start in net and earned the first win and shutout of her career, making four saves for SVSU.
  • The shot totals finished tied at 12-12, while SVSU led in corner kicks 4-3.
