Men's Tennis Upended in Second Round of NCAA Midwest Regional

Five of the six singles matches went into third sets.

CLINTON TWP., Mich. -- The No. 2 seeded-Wayne State University men's tennis squad (21-4 overall) fell 4-2 to third-seeded Drury (17-5 overall) in the second round of the 2019 NCAA Regional Tournament at the Peachtree Tennis Club on Sunday.

DOUBLES RESULTS
Sophomore Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and junior Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) fell 6-2 in their No. 2 doubles match against Augustin Diot and Paul Porcher.

Senior Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) lost their No. 3 doubles match vs. Leonardo Cerri and Lukas Stierling.

At No. 1 doubles, seniors Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) and Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) were down 5-4 versus Nico Hadeler and Grega Kokalj. when Drury claimed the doubles point.  Drury's first-flight duo is currently ranked 18th nationally in the Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Rankings, while Mertz and Vane are ranked 27th in the nation.

SINGLES RESULTS
Vane was first off the courts at No. 3 singles after tallying a win against Kokalj (6-4, 6-3).

Mertz was next off the courts at No. 4 singles, falling in a third set to Porcher (2-6, 6-2, 6-0).

Freshman Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) topped Stierling in a third set at No. 5 singles (4-6, 6-4, 6-3).

At No. 2 singles, Renaudie suffered a close third-set loss to Diot (3-6, 6-4, 6-4).

Nguyen fell in a third set to Cerri at No. 6 singles (7-6(5), 3-6, 6-3).

Karcz had an unfinished match at No. 1 singles vs. Hadeler, who is ranked 11th nationally in the Oracle/ITA Division II Men's Rankings.  Karcz was up 5-4 in the third set.
