ASHLAND, Ohio -- Playing its fifth road match in the last six contests, the fifth-ranked Wayne State University women's basketball team (14-2, 10-2 GLIAC) had its 10-game winning streak come to an end with an 84-68 setback at Ashland University (12-6 overall, 8-4 GLIAC) Saturday afternoon.
The Warriors started strong scoring 12 of the game's first 17 points in the opening five minutes. Senior center
Shareta Brown (Pontiac, Mich. / Grand Blanc) totaled eight points on two three-point plays (a conventional three-point play followed by a triple from beyond the arc), while sophomore forward
Gabby Machado (Pontiac, Mich. / Northern) and senior guard
Jackie Jones (Detroit, Mich. / Martin Luther King) each hit jumpers.
The Eagles tallied the next five points and kept their deficit under five until knotting the score at 24 as part of a 10-0 run by the hosts which included back-to-back three-pointers from Andi Daugherty and McKenzie Miller.
AU concluded the first half outscoring WSU 12-8 which gave the Eagles a 44-32 edge at intermission.
Wayne State trailed by nine to 12 points for the first four points of the second half until a jumper by senior forward
Amber McCann (Southfield, Mich. / Southfield-Lathrup) and junior guard
Brittany Streetman (Warren, Mich. / Lincoln) answering an Ashland triple with one of her own to make it an eight-point game (52-44) with 14:36 left.
The Warriors then scored five of the game's next seven points to pull within five (54-49) on a three-pointer by junior guard
Destiny Lavita-Stephens (Grand Blanc, Mich. / Goodrich) at the 12:41 mark.
WSU was again within five (56-51) after a Streetman jumper, but the Eagles responded with a 7-0 spurt to take a 12-point advantage (63-51) with 8:43 on the clock.
An offensive foul call on Brown with 7:39 remaining was her fifth foul of the game and Ashland closed out the game on a 21-15 run.
Brown led WSU with 20 points and tied for game-high rebounding honors with 13 boards. Lavita-Stephens and Streetman each connected twice from long range in scoring 11 points, while McCann contributed 10 points off the bench.
Wayne State shot 37 percent (23-of-62) from the floor, including 32 percent (6-of-19) from three-point range. The Warriors entered the game fourth in the nation in field goal percentage at 47.4%.
Meanwhile, Ashland shot 59 percent (34-of-58) from the field, and a video-game like 60 percent (12-of-20) from beyond the arc.
The Eagles, who were led in scoring by Andi Daughtery with 23 points, held a 36-31 edge in rebounding. Laina Snyder had a double-double for AU with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Wayne State will conclude its six away games in a seven-game stretch on Thursday with a 6 p.m. contest at Malone, before returning to the Matthaei on Jan. 31 to begin a three-game homestand.
