Volleyball Splits Final Day of Quincy Tournament

WSU will begin conference play at home next weekend.

QUINCY, Ill. -- The Wayne State University volleyball program (4-4 overall) finished play at the Quincy Tournament on Saturday by topping Quincy (1-6 overall) in four sets before falling in straight sets to Northwest Missouri State (4-4 overall) during the night cap.

After the tournament, Michelle Asiedu was named to the All-Tournament Team.

MATCH ONE vs. QUINCY (W, 3-1 / 16-25, 25-18, 25-19, 25-21)
HOW IT HAPPENED

- The Hawks jumped out to an early 8-0 lead to begin the first set and Wayne State would not be able to overcome the slow start, falling 25-16.

- The second set started better for the Warriors as it was tied at 7-7 after an ace from Madison Kielty (Plymouth, Mich. / Canton).  Back-to-back kills from Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio / Springfield) and Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) powered WSU to a 13-10 advantage.  Moore continued her solid play and kept the Green & Gold on top with a kill to give WSU a 20-17 lead.  Asiedu collected two kills down the stretch to give WSU a 25-18 victory and tie the match at 1-1.

- Wayne State held onto a 6-1 lead to begin the third set.  Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) kept the strong start going with a kill, stretching WSU's lead to 14-6.  The Warriors thwarted a Quincy comeback attempt as Asiedu closed out another winning set with another kill, 25-19.

- Asiedu continued her assault on the QU defenders and capped an 8-0 run to start the fourth set with a productive swing.  The lead grew to 20-11 after a Quincy attacking error.  The Hawks pulled within three at 23-20 but the Warriors were able to hold on for the game victory and win the match 3-1.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Asiedu surpassed her previous career-high of 14 kills by 10 with 24 against the Hawks, hitting an impressive .553 on 38 swings.  Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) tallied a career-best 46 assists.  Richardson led four Warriors with at least 10 digs by posting 19.

MATCH TWO vs. NORTHWEST MISSOURI STATE (L, 0-3 / 16-25, 22-25, 21-25)
HOW IT HAPPENED

-  The Bearcats led the first set 5-1 before WSU trimmed the deficit to two at 9-7 after a kill from Richardson and an ace fby Breault.  However, NW Missouri State went on a 5-0 run to take a 14-7 lead and would take the first set easily, 25-16.

- A kill from Moore gave WSU a 9-5 lead in the second set but the Bearcats would comeback to take an 11-10 lead.  The Green & Gold responded with a 5-0 run powered by two aces from Breault, giving WSU a 16-12 lead.  Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian) and Moore teamed up for a block for WSU's 20th point.  The Bearcats won the next five points, taking a 22-20 lead and they would go on to win 25-22.

- Northwest Missouri State started fast in the third set as it looked for a sweep.  The Bearcats led 4-1 but WSU would respond to take a 7-6 lead after a setting error by NW Missouri State.  The set was tied at 11-11 before the deficit grew to 15-11 for Wayne State.  The see-saw contest continued as WSU deadlocked the game at 15-15 and eventually took a one-point lead after a point from Asiedu. The Bearcats would control much of the remainder of the set and win 25-21 to complete the sweep.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
