Women's Basketball Wins Its First Game In Wayne State Fieldhouse

Warriors defeat Lake Erie 75-45

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University women's basketball squad (1-0 overall) played its first game in the Wayne State Fieldhouse as part of the 2021 GLIAC/GMAC Challenge being hosted by the Warriors.  WSU recorded a 75-45 triumph over Lake Erie College (0-1 overall) in the second game on Saturday's doubleheader.  Walsh defeated Ferris State, 80-64, in game one of the day.  The four teams will return to the Fieldhouse on Sunday with FSU facing LEC at 2 p.m., followed by the WSU vs. Walsh contest at 4 p.m.

HOW IT HAPPENED
First Quarter
Senior Kate Sherwood (Canton, Mich. / Belleville) scored the first four Warrior points of the season sandwiched around a Storm bucket.  A 6-1 Lake Erie run was snapped with a free throw by graduate student Tori Perez (Belleville, Mich.) and a lay-up by junior Becca Fugate (Holly, Mich.) to knot the game at 8-8.  Senior guard Alexis Miller (Howell, Mich.) drained a triple and Sherwood made two foul shots to conclude the 8-0 spurt by Wayne State.

Following an LEC basket, redshirt junior Maxine Moore (Southfield, Mich. / Detroit Country Day) scored from inside and junior Kate McArthur (Warren, Mich. / Cousino) connected from three-point range extending the WSU advantage to 18-10.  Two free throws by Miller and a fast-break lay-up by freshman Shea Tripp (Jackson, Mich. / Michigan Center) pushed the margin to 12 at 22-10.  The Storm scored the final points of the quarter cutting the Warrior lead to 10 (22-12) after 10 minutes.

Second Quarter
WSU scored the first 10 points of the second period on baskets by Tripp, Perez, Sherwood, freshman Alyssa Leister (St. Louis, Mich. / Alma) and Perez again to make it 32-12.  Lake Erie made a free throw to end the scoreless drought, but Fugate made a jumper, sophomore Chenelle King (Flint, Mich. / Carman-Ainsworth) knocked down a shot from beyond the arc and senior Sam Cherney (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) scored to make it 39-13.  The Storm made back-to-back triples to end the first half.

Third Quarter
After LEC pulled within 16 (39-23), Wayne State rattled off eight consecutive points with four different players getting buckets.  The Storm would get no closer than 17 points with the Warriors leading by 21 (59-38) after three periods.

Fourth Quarter
Wayne State had a 16-7 scoring advantage over the final 10 minutes.

QUOTING COACH LOHR
"The team was really excited in the locker room to be making history.  They're the first team to have a Warrior win in the new arena and we hope that goes down in the history books.  Not to get ahead of ourselves, but we want another one again tomorrow.  There's a lot of first here and a lot of new things happening with basketball, and the arena, and the partnership we have with the Pistons.  It's been a lot, it's been exciting, but to get our first win, we're really excited about it.

"We are not in a routine, which is making me a little uncomfortable, but I'm also a mom, so you have to just kind of roll with stuff.  We're all just rolling, and I give our young ladies a lot of credit.  Last minute changes, time changes, floor changes, practice time, location, all of that.  Our kids have really been upbeat and positive, and we need that with all the change taking place.  We had a nice win today, but we have a really tough challenge on our hands tomorrow with Walsh, and we need to play better if we're going to beat a team like Walsh.

"I always say, 'If your shot's not falling, you can always rebound.' I'm never going to tell them, 'Hey, you're rebounding way too much.'  Sam knows that.  She knows that's what keeps her on the floor.  I thought she was having a hard time seeing it go through.  It didn't go through the net for her until late, but grabbing 14 rebounds, that's huge.  We need her to do that.  Five blocks, 14 rebounds, so the scoring column isn't where she wants it to be, but it's okay.  It's a team sport, and she did a lot for us.  I was happy to be able to play a lot of players.  Again, it's been a long grind, a long preseason, and you want to reward them with some minutes.  Reward the hard work."

TEAM STATS
Wayne State shot 45 percent from the floor (29-of-65), while LEC was 17-of-58 (29 percent).  WSU was just 3-of-18 (17 percent) from three-point range, with the Storm shooting 37 percent (7-of-19) from beyond the arc.  The Warriors were solid at the charity stripe shooting 82 percent (14-of-17), while Lake Erie was 4-of-10 (40 percent).  WSU had a 46-35 edge in rebounding, while also forcing the Storm into 21 miscues.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Sherwood and Tripp tied for game-high scoring honors with 14 points apiece, with Cherney contributing game-high totals of 14 rebounds and five blocks.

LEADING THE STORM
Alexis Lehmkuhl tallied a team-best 13 points, while Abby Matalavage had 10 points.  Breanna Bauer had eight defensive rebounds.
