AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Wayne State university baseball team (5-1 overall) continued its Florida trip on Saturday with a doubleheader against Keiser (20-6 overall) on Saturday afternoon and the Warriors won game one 3-2 and game two 5-1. The Seahawks came into the games ranked 15th in the NAIA.
GAME ONE (W, 3-2)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Keiser struck first with a run in the bottom of the second inning aided by two walks, a wild pitch and a sacrifice fly. Redshirt junior Nate Roede (Byron Center, Mich.) blasted a two-run home run in the top of the fifth inning to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead. Redshirt junior Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) singled to begin the top of the sixth inning and stole second base. He reached third base on a ground out and eventually scored on a wild pitch to extend WSU's lead to 3-1.
The Seahawks answered with an RBI triple in the bottom of the sixth inning but the Warriors would hold to win 3-2.
AT THE PLATE
Foley had two of the four WSU hits, while Roede Wayne State's only two RBI of the day.
ON THE MOUND
Junior Ryan Korolden (Yale, Mich.) (1-0) worked six innings and allowed two runs on two hits and five walks with five strikeouts. Redshirt senior Brendan Bilkovic (West Bloomfield, Mich.) earned the save by recording the final three outs.
GAME TWO (W, 5-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
Keiser took the lead first for the second straight game on an RBI double in the top of the first inning. The Warriors scored four runs on three hits and a KU error to take a 4-1 lead. Redshirt junior Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) did most of the damage with a no doubt three-run home run to right field.
Freshman CJ Maury (Brampton, Ont. / Mayfield SS) doubled in the bottom of the sixth inning and later scored on a fielder's choice from freshman Logan Tobel (Brighton, Mich. / Hartland).
AT THE PLATE
Senior Ryne Travis (Lockport, Ill. / Lockport Twp.) went 2-for-3 with a run scored.
ON THE MOUND
Senior Nicholas O'Dea (Livonia, Mich. / Detroit Catholic Central) (1-0) worked a complete game, recording eight strikeouts and allowing an earned run on three hits anf three walks.
UP NEXT
The Green & Gold are scheduled to play Bethel on Monday at noon.
