Laker Men's Basketball Fall to Quincy in Overtime at Holiday Classic

QUINCY, Ill. – The Lake Superior State men's basketball program (4-7, 3-1 GLIAC) fell to the Quincy Hawks (7-5, 3-1 GLVC) by a final score of 59-54 in overtime in the final game of the Hansen – Spear Holiday Classic on Sunday.

Caden Ebeling (Shelby Twp., Mich.) opened up the scoring with a three-pointer less than 20 seconds into the game as the Lakers quickly pushed ahead to a 10-4 advantage. The Hawks would respond with an 11-2 run of their own. Both teams would go back and forth for the remainder of the opening half as Xander Okerlund (Empire, Mich.) scored five-straight points to retake the lead, but a late basket from Quincy would send the game into the halftime break with the Hawks leading 25-24.

The Lakers would come out swinging in the second half, earning several trips to the free throw line to grind out a 12-2 run to go back up by seven points, but the Hawks would not go away, pulling back to within one before a C.J. Robinson (Clarkston, Mich.) layup kept his team out in front. However, Quincy was able to go on a 7-0 scoring burst to pull back in front. Ebeling and David Wren (Ypsilanti, Mich.) would keep the Lakers in the game with clutch free throws at the line, but they still found themselves down with time running low. However, Andy Soma (Traverse City, Mich.) was able to track down a loose offensive rebound that had made its way all the way to the backcourt and find a wide open Ebeling underneath the basket to tie up the game at 50-50, forcing an extra five minutes to decide a winner.

Quincy was able to strike first in overtime with a pair of free throws, but Robinson answered with a tough midrange jumper. The Hawks got back to the line to retake the lead, but this time, it was Ebeling with the answer to tie the game at 54-54. However, Quincy was able to ice the game away at the charity stripe to steal the win by a final score of 59-54.

Ebeling led the way offensively with 17 points, and he was named to the Hansen - Spear Holiday Classic All-Tournament Team shortly after the game. Wren and Robinson would also join him in double-figure scoring with 13 and 11 points, respectively. Meanwhile, Okerlund led the team in rebounding with eight.

The Lakers will return to action after the holiday break when they travel to take on the Lewis Flyers on Wednesday, Jan. 4 with tipoff scheduled for 4:30 p.m.
