Volleyball Completes Perfect Weekend with Sweep of Ashland

The Warriors improved to 2-0 in the GLIAC after Saturday's victory.

DETROIT -- On what was a busy and exciting day on the WSU athletic campus as the Centennial Celebration of Champions got underway with an open house, the Wayne State University volleyball team (6-4, 2-0 GLIAC) completed a perfect weekend with its second straight sweep, this one coming against Ashland (6-4, 0-2 GLIAC) on Saturday afternoon.

The Eagles were receiving votes in the most recent AVCA Coaches Poll, which was released on Sept. 11.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- WSU led the first set 5-3 after a service ace from Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central).  The home lead grew to 11-6 following a solo block from Michelle Asiedu (Holland, Ohio, Springfield).  Asiedu teamed up with Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central) for a block to put the Warriors up 15-9.  Another combo block put WSU ahead 19-12 and the Green & Gold would go on to win 25-20.

- Hannah Moore (Louisville, Ky. / Assumption) gave WSU a 4-2 lead with a kill early in the second set.  Moore continued to have the hot hand and another point by her extended the home advantage to 11-8.  The Eagles stormed back and led 20-18 after consecutive kills by Paige Leitz.  The Warriors won seven of the final eight points to win the set 25-22.

- Wayne State started fast in the third set and led 11-6 following an ace from Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian).  Krenz and Frazee blocked an AU attack to give the Warriors a 17-10 lead.  WSU controlled the remainder of the set and won 25-17 to earn its fourth sweep of the season.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
- Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich. / Huron) hit .385 and finished with 18 kills, while Moore tallied 12 kills and hit .370.  Natalie Breault (Bad Axe, Mich.) dished out 38 assists and Rodriguez led the defense with 15 digs.  As a team, WSU collected 12 blocks (five solo) as it held AU to a .088 hitting percentage.

UP NEXT
- WSU will travel to the west side of the state for a midweek clash at Grand Valley State with first serve schedule for 7:00 p.m.
