Bulldogs Softball Falls In Two Close Contests On Friday At Ashland

Big Rapids, Mich. - The Ferris State University softball squad battled host Ashland to the wire in a pair of Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) contests on Friday (April 23) in Ashland, Ohio.

The host Eagles took the opener 4-3 in a tightly-contested contest before edging FSU 3-2 in eight innings of action in the nightcap.

In the opener, Ashland scored once in the first and once more in the third in building a 2-0 lead. FSU tied the game up with two runs in the sixth, but the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to garner the victory after the Bulldogs had taken their first lead in the top of the inning. Overall, AU compiled nine hits to eight for the Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs were led at the plate by left fielder Abby Mitchell, who doubled and posted a team-high tying two hits with a run scored. Center fielder Paige Kortz also had two hits while the trio of Kaitlyn Orme, Ali Magiera and Evelyn Blood all drove in runs.

Freshman Aryn Gallacher pitched the entire six and one-third innings in the opener for the Bulldogs, giving up only three earned runs on nine hits with two walks.

In the nightcap, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead after two innings of action before AU tied the game up in the sixth. The score remained tied and went to extra innings before the Eagles plated the winning run in the eighth for the win. AU posted 12 hits compared to six for the Bulldogs.

FSU shortstop Kodi Ramirez and third baseman Amara Zukowski each had two hits for the Bulldogs while Mitchell and Ramirez both knocked in runs. 

In the circle, FSU's Kaitlyn Nugent tossed four innings and allowed one run on five hits with two strikeouts and four walks. Kristie Gray hurled two and one-thirds of an inning, allowing one run on five hits with two walks. Finally, Gallacher pitched two-thirds of an inning in relief and gave up one run on two hits.

The Bulldogs will visit Saginaw Valley State on Sunday, April 25, for a league twin bill in University Center, Mich. The opening game starts at 2 p.m. (ET) with the finale slated for 4 p.m. (ET).
