Men's Tennis Takes Down Ashland

The Warriors won seven of the nine matches played.

CLINTON TOWNSHIP, Mich. -- The Wayne State University men's tennis team (7-1 overall) extended its winning streak to six games with a 6-1 win over Ashland this afternoon. 

SINGLES
The Warriors won five of the six singles matches against the Eagles.  Luke Laws (Sunderland, England) made quick work of his opponent at No. 6 singles, winning 6-0, 6-1. 

At No. 4 singles, Cedric Drenth (Sulzbach, Germany) was able to post a 6-1, 6-0 victory. 

Daniel Grey (Wiesbaden, Germany) won his No. 2 singles match, 7-5, 7-5. 

Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) was strong at No. 3 singles, collecting a 6-2, 6-1 win.  The win pushed him into second place in terms of career singles wins as a Warrior. 

At No. 5 singles, Ben Lakeman (Penzance Cornwall, England) notched a 6-2, 6-2 victory. 

Dom Spicer (London, England) put up a strong fight at No. 1 singles, but ultimately fell, 6-7 (4), 7-5, 6-7 (6). 

DOUBLES
Grey and Drenth teamed up for a 6-4 win at No. 1 doubles.

Laws and Spicer also won thier match, collecting a 6-2 victory at No. 2 doubles. 

David Pluszczyk (White Lake, Mich. / Lakeland) and Ryan Okonski (Stevensville, Mich. / St. Joseph) fell at No. 3 doubles, 4-6.

"Pretty good energy in doubles.  Won at No. 1 and No. 2 doubles," coach Bryan Morrow said.  "Daniel (Grey) played a hard-hitting guy.  Daniel played well.  Niklas (Karcz) took care of business at No. 3.  He played really steady.  Cedric (Drenth) took care of business at No. 4, nicely.  Ben (Lakeman) and Luke (Laws) as well.  Very nice wins at two, three, four, five and six." 

UP NEXT
The Warriors are set to hit the court again on March 5 against Indianapolis.  That match will begin at 3 PM.
