Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Saginaw Valley State (Cardinals) in non-conference play on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
Big Rapids, Mich. - The nationally 11th-ranked Ferris State University women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win against Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) foe Saginaw Valley State (Cardinals) in non-conference play on Sunday, Sept. 22, at the Bulldog Soccer Field.
Ferris State sophomore Pia Nagel scored both goals to pace the Bulldogs as senior keeper Grace Kraft made her first start of the season and picked up a shutout victory.
In the first half, at 25:57, Nagel got alone in front of SVSU keeper Alyssa Watts from straight on and powered a shot to the top right of the goal for her team-leading third goal of the season, giving FSU a 1-0 lead.
Ferris State junior Bri Rogers set up Nagel for her second assist of the season.
Early in the second half, Nagel struck again for her second of the game and fourth of the season at 58:48 in a crowd in front of the goal, lacing a low shot through traffic to the left post and in. Junior Mackenzie Dawes made the last touch to Nagel and earned her team-leading third assist of the season on the play.
In goal, Kraft made three stops for a shutout in her first win and clean sheet of the season. The shutout is the 11th of her career, moving her into a tie for second place all-time in program history for career shutouts. It was also her 16th career victory, moving her into a tie for third place all-time in school history in wins.
For Ferris State, Nagel marked her ninth career game-winning goal, and is now two away from tying the school record for career game-winning goals set in 2003 by Emily Rogers.
For Saginaw Valley State, Watts took the loss in goal, making three saves for the game.
Both teams attempted 12 shots for the game. Ferris State had a 5-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Ferris State is back in action at home on Friday, Sept. 27, at the Bulldog Soccer Field when FSU takes on the Davenport University Panthers in the first GLIAC match of the year at 4 p.m. (ET).
