Women's Tennis Defeats Grand Valley State to Remain in Conference Race

The Warriors improved to 4-0 in the GLIAC with three matches to play.

DETROIT -- The No. 23-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis squad (13-5 overall, 4-0 GLIAC) shut out Grand Valley State (8-8 overall, 2-2 GLIAC) on Friday evening inside the Duchene Athletic Facility for the team's fifth consecutive victory.

In addition to the fifth win in a row, WSU improved to 4-0 within the conference to jump into first place in the league standings.  Ferris State, Sunday's opponent, is right behind at 3-0.  It was also the Green and Gold's eighth triumph both at home and against the Midwest Region for the season.

Friday's contest was a re-match of both the 2023 GLIAC Tournament final round and NCAA Midwest Regional finals, which were both won by the Warriors.

DOUBLES
The hosts nabbed the doubles point with two victories in the category.

WSU's No. 48-ranked tandem of Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) downed Vasileia Griva and Rachel Sam by a 6-3 score at the No. 2 spot, while Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) won 6-4 against Anna Soteras and Vale Mozas at the third flight.

Those two wins were the first two completed doubles matches and helped the Green and Gold to the initial point of the day.

In what was a close affair at the No. 1 spot, the eighth-ranked team of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) lost 7-6 (8-6) to Taylor Barrett and Neus Ramos despite a strong effort.

SINGLES
The Warriors completed their fifth 7-0 sweep of the season, all in the past nine matchups, by earning victories in all six singles contests.

Arafat made quick work of Barrett at the second flight, defeating the GVSU player 6-2, 6-3 to become the first completed match.

Over at the No. 4 position, Szpakowska secured set wins of 6-3 and 6-4 to win against Sam, which put WSU ahead 3-0 on the scoreboard.

Serving as the clinching point was Ruyssen, as the veteran Warrior obtained a triumph in three sets (4-6, 6-4, 6-2) despite dropping the opening set against Griva.  Ruyssen entered the contest as the No. 18-ranked singles player in Division II.

Komar faced the No. 65-ranked Soteras and was able to win 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 at the third flight.

The other Wayne State player to win in straight sets was Gorgidze, doing so with triumphs of 7-5 and 6-2 vs. Ramos at the No. 5 spot.

The last match at the sixth flight between Weekes and Mozas was perhaps the most competitive.  The WSU player started with a 6-2 win, before the GVSU tied the contest with a 6-1 victory.  The two then squared off in a 10-point super tiebreaker in which Weekes tallied an 11-9 triumph to secure the shutout.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will play against Ferris State on Sunday in Detroit for what will likely be a battle for the GLIAC Regular-Season Championship.  It will also be WSU's final regular-season home affair of the 2024 campaign.  Action will follow the men's match and is scheduled for 2 p.m. either outside on the WSU Tennis Courts or inside at the Duchene Athletic Facility.
