Another Shutout for Women's Tennis

The Warriors won 7-0 vs. #29-Tiffin at home on Thursday.

DETROIT -- The No. 11-ranked Wayne State University women's tennis team (17-3 overall) defeated a ranked opponent in No. 29-ranked Tiffin University (13-5 overall) by a 7-0 score on Thursday afternoon at the Duchene Athletic Facility.  The win marks the fourth victory this season for the Warriors over a nationally ranked program.

DOUBLES
It was yet another impressive showing for the usual WSU doubles pairings, as the team grabbed an opening 1-0 advantage for the fourth match in a row.

Finishing first and garnering a 6-1 victory at the second position were Malak Arafat (Alexandria, Egypt) and Dea Gorgidze (Tbilisi, Georgia).  They handled Mathilde Gilles and Emily Barrett to secure the win.

Playing against another ranked pair for the first time in four contests, the top flight and No. 50-ranked duo of Anais Ruyssen (Nantes, France) and Marta Komar (Inowroclaw, Poland) picked up a 6-2 triumph against the No. 38-ranked team of Anaelle Lepinay and Carina Avram.

Lastly, Martyna Szpakowska (Gdansk, Poland) and Shanice Weekes (London, England) posted a 6-4 win over Shea Foster and Jessica Peace to record their 13th doubles victory together this season.

SINGLES
All six singles matches were claimed by the Warriors, and five were decided in straight sets.

Ruyssen finished first, grabbing a 6-2, 6-0 win over Lepinay at her usual top position for the Green and Gold.

Making the score 3-0 was Arafat, who won by matching 6-4 set scores at the No. 3 spot vs. Peace.  The freshman improved to 16-3 in dual matches this spring.

Officially clinching the match for WSU was Komar, who defeated Barrett at the No. 2 spot, 6-2, 6-3.

In what was by far the closest match of the afternoon, Gorgidze was locked in a battle with Avram at the fourth position.  The Wayne State redshirt freshman won 6-4 in the opening set, but narrowly lost her opportunity to win in straight sets after falling 7-6 (7) in the second set.  The match went to a 10-point tie-breaking set, and Gorgidze was able to rebound following her close loss in the previous set to win the match with a 10-8 score.

Szpakowska and Weekes continued their run of victories as well.  Szpakowska earned her 19th singles win in 20 dual matches (one went unfinished) by handling Celine Ferron at the No. 5 spot, while Weekes notched her 18th dual match victory of the spring by beating Gilles at the sixth flight, 6-2, 6-1.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will see the court next on Friday, April 14 when the team hosts conference rival Davenport.  The opening serve is set for approximately 2 p.m. and will follow the men's match vs. the Panthers.
