DETROIT -- The No. 24 Wayne State University men's tennis squad (13-3 overall, 3-0 GLIAC) upended Ashland (9-7 overall, 2-1 GLIAC), 7-0, in Detroit on Sunday afternoon.
DOUBLES RESULTS
Seniors
Griffin Mertz (Farmington Hills, Mich. / North Farmington) and
Taylor Vane (Southampton, England) were first off the courts after nearly blanking Stuart Brdicka and Jordan Phelps, 6-1, at No. 1 doubles.
At the second flight, sophomore
Niklas Karcz (Bottrop, Germany) and junior
Pierre Renaudie (Sathonay-Camp, France) notched a 6-3 victory over Priyank Soni and Stanislaw Grzeslo.
At No. 3 doubles, redshirt junior
Derek Sammons (Coldwater, Mich.) and freshman
David Solar (Prague, Czech Republic) won their match in a tiebreaker (7-6(2)) versus Colten Clark and Tche Kun Teng.
SINGLES RESULTS
Mertz was first off the courts, winning his No. 4 singles match vs. Phelps (6-0, 6-3).
Karcz was next to finish, claiming a win at No. 1 singles against Soni (6-2, 6-0).
At No. 3 singles, Vane notched a victory over Clark (6-2, 6-0).
Renaudie tallied a win in his No. 2 singles match versus Brdicka (6-3, 6-3).
Freshman
Max Rink (Wetzlar, Germany) blanked Tche in both sets (6-0, 6-0).
First-year player
Donovan Nguyen (Troy, Mich. / Utica) won his match versus Grzeslo after a close second set (6-2, 7-5).
