Combined No-Hitter Propels Baseball to Series Sweep

Wayne State topped UMSL 11-0 on Saturday to improve to 8-0 on the year.

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- On a cold and windy day in The Gateway City, Wayne State University baseball (8-0 overall) topped Missouri-St. Louis (0-10 overall) 11-0 on Saturday.  The Warriors have matched the best start in program history, which occurred in 2014.  Six pitchers held the Tritons hitless to complete the combined no-hitter.  It is the first no-hitter in program history since March 28, 2004 when Kyle Hill held Mercyhurst hitless over seven innings.  WSU has out-scored its opponents 70-20 so far this season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Tristen Jorah (Clinton Twp., Mich. / Sterling Heights Stevenson) gave WSU an early 2-0 lead with a two-run double down the right field line in the top of the first inning.  Noah Miller (Macomb, Mich. / University Liggett) doubled down the left field line to begin the second inning and later scored on WSU's third double of the day from Michael MacLean (Bloomfield Hills, Mich. / Country Day / The Lawrenceville School) to give the Warriors a 4-0 advantage.  Justin Kelly (Wheaton, Ill. / Wheaton Warrenville South) kept the bats going with an RBI single into left for the fifth run of the day.

A Josh Blaszczak (Brownstown, Mich. / Riverview Gabriel Richard) single and a wild pitch produced an RBI single from Ryan Foley (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline), giving the Green & Gold a 6-0 lead.  MacLean was plunked with the bases loaded for a hard-earned RBI as Wayne State led 7-0 after three at-bats.  Tyler Waldrop (Grand Ledge, Mich.) (2-0) retired the side in order in the bottom of the third inning to keep the momentum in the WSU dugout.

UMSL's third error of the day, a dropped fly ball, plus a CJ Drogosch (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) RBI single pushed Wayne State's advantage to 9-0 in the fifth inning.  The Tritons' first baserunner of the game came in the bottom of the fifth inning on a walk.  Jacob Finkbeiner (Saline, Mich. / Saline) gave WSU a 10-0 lead with an RBI single in the top of sixth inning.

An RBI single by Robert Iacobelli (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Brother Rice) in the top of the ninth inning accounted for WSU's 11th run of the day.

AT THE PLATE
Wayne State pounded out 12 hits led by a 3-for-4 performance from Finkbeiner who also drew two walks.  MacLean drove in three runs, while Jorah went 2-for-3 with two RBI.  Nine Warriors collected at least one base hit.

ON THE MOUND
Six pitchers combined to keep UMSL out of the hit column.  Waldrop earned his second victory of the season, while not allowing a hit over five innings and striking out four.  Brandon Williams (Sterling Heights, Mich. / Stevenson) and Josh Nelson (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Saline) pitched scoreless sixth and seventh innings, respectively.  Nick Cowen (Tecumseh, Mich.) and Matt Krutsch (Essex, Ont.) teamed up to hang a zero in the eighth inning.  Jack Schmidt (Fishers, Ind. / Indianapolis Cathedral) struck out two batters in the ninth to seal the win and complete the no-hitter.

UP NEXT
The Warriors will make their annual Spring Break trip to Florida for the RussMatt Invitational.  Wayne State will play a total of nine games beginning on March 7th vs. Notre Dame College.
