Volleyball Wins in Three vs. Purdue Northwest

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University volleyball team (14-11 overall, 9-5 GLIAC) hosted Purdue Northwest (3-23 overall, 0-13 GLIAC) and the Warriors swept the Pride by scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-14.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Warriors led 4-3 in the opening set after a poor set by Purdue Northwest.  Wayne State used a 5-0 run to take an 11-7 lead powered by kills from Madelyn Krenz (Chenoa, Ill. / Prairie Central), Grace Frazee (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Grand Rapids Christian), Taylor Wagner (St. Joseph, Mich. / Lakeshore) and Olivia Fike (North Branch, Mich.).  The Warriors continued to pull away with a 7-1 run to give the home team a 19-10 advantage.  Two attack errors by the Pride gave the Green & Gold a 1-0 match lead.

The second set was tied at 5-5 after a kill from Frazee.  A block by Fike pushed the WSU lead to 9-8 and a 6-0 run later in the game by the Warriors made it 20-16.  Wayne State won five of the final seven points to win 25-19 and take a 2-0 match lead.

Wayne State led 6-4 to begin the third set and a 4-0 run by the Warriors pushed the margin to 10-4.  Lauren VanderWal (Caledonia, Mich.) came off the bench to provide a spark and collected two kills during the rally.  Two more kills from VanderWal helped the Green & Gold take. 15-6 lead.  Hailey Richardson (New Boston, Mich.) notched a kill and gave WSU a 20-9 lead as the Warriors would go on to win 25-14.

LEADING THE WARRIORS
Richardson led the offensive attack with 17 kills, while also collecting 10 digs.  Fike finished with 10 kills, while Kamryn Duffield (Romeo, Mich.) dished out 37 assists.  Ellie Rodriguez (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Catholic Central) and Haley Tenelshof (Grand Rapids, Mich. / Jenison) both tallied 10 digs.

GLIAC TOURNAMENT
WSU has qualified for the GLIAC Tournament for the third straight season and are currently the fifth seed.  The Warriors still have a chance to host a Nov. 7th quarterfinal contest but will need some help as the top four teams get hosting duties for the opening round. Saginaw Valley State currently holds the tiebreaker of Wayne State.

UP NEXT
Wayne State will host Parkside on Saturday afternoon with first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.  The Warriors will honor their six seniors prior to the beginning of the match.
