Nair’s Overtime Goal Sinks Pioneers

Box Score

The Malone University men's soccer team (4-6-1, 4-4-1 GLIAC) dropped a heartbreaking contest at home to Northwood University (MI) 1-0 in overtime Friday afternoon.

Redemption proved sweet for Timberwolves forward Sam Nair. Midway through the first overtime period, Nair walked in all alone on goal but was turned away by Malone junior goalkeeper Felipe Monteiro. Four minutes later Nair had another chance to win the game and this time he made the most of it. Nair's initial header was stopped by Monteiro but he managed to clean up the rebound, sending Northwood (6-4-1, 6-3 GLIAC) into a frenzy and Malone fans home heartbroken.

Junior Stephen Wannah and sophomore Sam Tonelli led Malone with two shots a piece. The Pioneers were outshot 23-9 for the game and 13-2 in shots on goal. Felipe Monteiro made 10 saves for Malone. He was aided by a couple of saves by junior defender Luan Tufani, who twice cleared the ball of the goal line in a flurry of action in front of goal late in the first half to keep the game scoreless.

Malone next takes on Notre Dame College (OH) in a pivotal GLIAC showdown next Friday, Oct. 19 at 12:30 pm.
