2022 Saginaw Valley State Preview

The Saginaw Valley State University men’s soccer team opens the 2022 season with a pair of home matchups against nationally ranked opponents this week.

The Cardinals are coming off a successful 2021 season, that saw SVSU finish 10-5-5 overall and 6-3-5 in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

SVSU returns several key performers to the roster this season led by senior goalkeeper Mason Maziasz. In 2021, Maziasz played in seven games, finishing with four shutouts and a 0.39 goals against average, while stopping 88 percent of the shots he faced. He has 22 career wins and 12 shutouts.

The defense will be anchored by All-GLIAC returners Benjamin Adamson and Robbie Baker, while Brady Walker will be looked to as a leader on offense. Walker scored seven goals and added five assists for the Cardinals last season from his midfield position. SVSU Head Coach Louis Barrow enters his fourth season in 2022.

The Cardinals open the 2022 season against No. 25 Maryville University at 2 pm on Thursday at the IM fields. SVSU will remain home to host No. 16 University of Illinois-Springfield at 2 pm on Saturday.
