WSU's Brown and AU's Schaly are named NCBWA Midwest Region pitcher and coach of the year

DALLAS, Texas - Wayne State senior Hunter Brown was named National College Baseball Writers Association Midwest Region Pitcher of the Year, while Ashland's John Schaly was named region coach of the year for 2018-19. Brown was among 11 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference players recognized by the NCBWA.

Brown led the GLIAC in strikeouts with 114 and earned run average at 2.21. Hall of fame coach Schaly has led the Eagles to a 45-12 record heading into the NCAA Division II super regional, which begins at 1 p.m. today against Illinois Springfield.

In addition to Brown, Davenport junior second baseman Nolan Bryant, junior third baseman Jacob Buchberger and junior outfielder Travis Harvey, Northwood senior utility player Nick Palmer, and Ashland junior designated hitter Carson Mittermaier and senior relief pitcher Chris Slavik made first team honors.

Second-team honors went to Northwood junior first baseman David Vinsky and senior relief pitcher Lennon Gwizdala, and Ashland sophomore shortstop Austin Eifrid and senior starting pitcher Devin Peters.
