GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) announced its 2019 All-GLIAC Baseball Teams and postseason awards in conjunction with the conference's annual baseball tournament, which begins Thursday at Traverse City Field. The awards were voted on by the conference baseball coaches.
PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Jacob Buchberger - Davenport
Jacob Buchberger (Montague, Mich.) becomes the second Panther in consecutive years to earn GLIAC Player of the Year following Zac Wilson in 2018. He had one of the best seasons in Davenport history, ranking second with a .424 batting average. He also ranked fourth in stolen bases (22) and runs (50). In addition, he ranked fifth in slugging percentage (.673) and on-base percentage (.492), sixth in total bases (111) and eighth in hits (70). Buchberger led the GLIAC in batting average and stolen bases and was also second in hits and slugging percentage. He ranked third in runs, total bases, and on-base percentage.
PITCHER OF THE YEAR: Hunter Brown - Wayne State
FRESHMAN PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Hunter DeLanoy - Wayne State
Hunter DeLanoy (Hartland, Mich.) hit .339 in 45 starts and led Wayne State with eight triples, which is third nationally and one shy pf the program record held by Dave Zelamanski (1978). He scored 33 runs and tallied nine doubles and two home runs, while driving in 36 runs. DeLanoy enters the playoffs with a .511 slugging percentage and a .393 on-base percentage. The freshman stole four bases and made just one error in 108 chances to post a .991 fielding percentage. DeLanoy is the first Warrior to earn the GLIAC Freshman Player of the Year Award since Michael Wiseman (2008).
FRESHMAN PITCHER OF THE YEAR: Rylan Peets - Grand Valley State
Grand Valley State freshman Rylan Peets (Spring Lake, Mich.) led the Laker pitching staff with a 4-3 record and a 2.85 earned run average during the 2019 baseball campaign. Peets logged 47.1 innings, striking out 37 and holding opponents to a .257 batting average. His 2.85 earned run average ranked fourth in the GLIAC. Peets won his final three GLIAC starts, including a complete-game, 4-1 9-inning victory over Purdue Northwest when he allowed just one run, while striking out five. Peets tallied 14 strikeouts, while allowing just 14 hits and six runs in his final 17.1 innings.
Ashland coach John Schaly was named the GLIAC Coach of the Year for the seventh time in his 22 seasons at the helm. He guided the Eagles to their fifth conference regular season title and their first since 2016. Ashland is 37-10 overall on the season and ranked 11th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association poll. The Eagles are also the top team in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region rankings and are seeking their 16th NCAA Tournament bid under Schaly, who has a 1159-636-7 overall record as a collegiate head coach, including a 796-418-4 mark at AU. His 1,159 career wins rank second among active Division II coaches.
