SVSU's Paperd, AU's Stover Earn Weekly Baseball Honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly baseball awards for the third time of the 2020 season. Saginaw Valley St. sophomore catcher Todd Paperd earned GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week honors, while Ashland junior Josh Stover captured Pitcher of the Week accolades.

PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Todd Paperd  - Saginaw Valley St.

Sophomore catcher Todd Paperd had a great week for the Cardinals on their spring trip to Florida this past week. Paperd went 7-for-13 at the plate, hitting .538 with a slugging percentage of .846. He had two triples, three RBI and walked once for Saginaw Valley. Todd leads the Cards with a .476 batting average this season and ranks fourth in the league with that mark. SVSU returns to action on the road this weekend for a three-game series at Seton Hill before beginning GLIAC play at Ashland Mar. 20-22.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Josh Stover - Ashland

Ashland University junior starter Josh Stover was named the GLIAC Pitcher of the Week the league office announced on Monday (March 9) afternoon. It is the first time Stover has won the award in his career and he is already the second AU pitcher to claim the honor after senior Chance Hitchcock won it on Feb. 24. Stover struck out 17 batters in a complete game seven-inning shutout on Friday (March 6) as the Eagles (7-2) run-ruled St. Cloud State, 10-0, in Ashland's spring Florida trip opener. The right-hander struck out multiple hitters in every inning and struck out the side in the first, third and seventh innings. He gave up just four hits and walked one. The 17 strikeouts were two shy of Ken Kravec's seven-inning school record set in 1971. Stover has now struck out 29 and walked just five hitters in 17 1/3 innings on the season.
