Gary Southshore RailCats will host 2022 GLIAC Baseball Tournament

GLIAC -- The U.S. Steel Yard in Gary, Ind., will be the home site for the 2022 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament May 11-14.

The Gary/Hammond area has recently served as host for the 2021 GLIAC Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments and 2021 Midwest Volleyball Crossover Tournament. The Steel Yard is home of the Gary Southshore RailCats AA minor league baseball team and in 2019 received over $1 million in upgrades, including a re-sodded playing field, new light fixtures and a new sound system.

“The GLIAC looks forward to bringing another great event to the northern Indiana/Chicago region,” GLIAC Commissioner Kris Dunbar said. “We’ve been talking to the RailCats for several years and are thankful they can accommodate us for 2022. We are impressed with the Steel Yard facility, and know their staff will make sure to give our players and fans a great experience.”

The GLIAC has played recent tournaments in Lansing, Traverse City and Detroit. The Lansing Lugnuts’ facility is not available in 2022 due to schedule changes set by Major League Baseball.

“The RailCats are excited to partner with the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference to host their annual conference tournament at the Steel Yard,” said Anthony Giamannco, Gary SouthShore RailCats General Manager. “The tournament will be a great opportunity to showcase the Steel Yard and all of Northwest Indiana to GLIAC fans from across the Midwest. Thank you to the GLIAC and the SouthShore CVA for partnering with us to bring this event to Gary.”

"We're thrilled the GLIAC Conference has chosen the Steel Yard to host their baseball conference championships,” said Megan Goodan, manager of sport development for the South Shore Convention and Visitors Authority. “Our partnership with the NCAA DII conferences (GLVC, G-MAC and GLIAC) has flourished after hosting the America's Crossroads Bowl game in 2019. Since then, the South Shore has had the opportunity to host the NCAA DII Midwest Region Crossover Volleyball Tournament (the nation’s largest collegiate volleyball tournament), which led to the commissioners from each conference visiting the Steel Yard in October. We're fortunate to have beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities to host these championships and create one-of-a-kind experiences for the student-athletes, coaches, families and fans that visit the Region.”
