WSU's Tanderys and SVSU's Merillat earn GLIAC baseball weekly honors

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its sixth weekly baseball awards of the 2023 baseball season. Wayne State graduate student infielder Chris Tanderys received GLIAC Baseball Player of the Week recognition, while Saginaw Valley State junior hurler Hunter Merillat was selected pitcher of the week.


PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chris Tanderys, Wayne State

Chris Tanderys was named GLIAC Player of the Week for the second time this season and third time in his career on Monday. Tanderys hit .450 (9-for-20) in five games last week with 18 total bases, a .450 on-base percentage and .900 slugging percentage. He registered multiple hits in four of the five contests while racking up three runs scored, one double, one triple, two homeruns, 10 RBI, and only four strikeouts in 20 plate appearances. The highlight of the week came on Sunday in game one against Parkside with a walk-off three-run home run.

PITCHER OF THE WEEK: Hunter Merillat, Saginaw Valley State

Junior pitcher Hunter Merillat earned his first GLIAC Pitcher of the Week honors of the season. Merillat pitched eight scoreless innings on Friday as the Cardinals defeated Purdue Northwest 3-2 to sweep the double header starting conference play. The Sanford native punched out six and allowed only one hit. After Friday's performance, Merillat leads SVSU with a 1.05 ERA.
