BAY CITY, Mich. - Wayne State University senior running back Joique Bell (Benton Harbor, Mich.) was named the 2009 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) Football “Player of the Year” in balloting conducted by the league’s head coaches. Senior quarterback Brad Iciek (Grandville, Mich.) of Grand Valley State University was voted “Offensive Back of the Year,” while Hillsdale College’s Keith Otterbein garnered “Coach of the Year” honors.

The rest of the
GLIAC’s postseason awards were chosen as follows: rookie
running back Monterae Williams (Canton,
Ohio/McKinley) of the University of Findlay earned
“Freshman of the Year” accolades; senior linebacker
John Jacobs (Prudenville, Mich. / Midland Dow) of
Saginaw Valley State University earned “Defensive Back of the
Year” honors; senior offensive tackle Nick McDonald
(Sterling Heights, Mich./Henry Ford II) of Grand Valley
State earned the “Offensive Lineman of the Year” award;
while Grand Valley State junior defensive lineman Danny
Richard (West Bloomfield, Mich.) was named
“Defensive Lineman of the Year.”
Bell not only finished the regular season leading
the GLIAC in rushing, scoring and all-purpose yards per game but
the entire NCAA (including I-A/FBS, I-AA/FCS, II and III) in all
three categories. He rushed for 2,084 yards, the 15th-best mark in
NCAA Division II history, while his 17.5 points per game average
was the eighth-best mark in D-II history. For his career, Bell had
6,728 rushing yards (sixth in D-II/8th in NCAA history), while his
152.91 rushing yards per game is 11th in D-II and 25th in NCAA
history. He scored 576 points which ranks fourth in D-II and fifth
in NCAA history, while his 13.1 points per game average is fourth
in D-II and 10th in NCAA history. Bell’s 8,055 all-purpose
yards is fourth in D-II and ninth in NCAA history.
Iciek ranked third in the nation and led the
GLIAC in pass efficiency rating (173.8). He completed 165-of-256
passes for 2,359 yards and 26 touchdowns with just two
interceptions, while leading GVSU to its fifth-straight GLIAC title
and improved his record as a starting quarterback to 33-3. Iciek
directed an offense that ranked first in the GLIAC in rushing
(237.8 ypg), third in passing (227.4 ypg), first in total offense
(465.2 ypg) and second in scoring (36.9). He has now thrown for
7,636 yards and 89 touchdowns in his career.
Jacobs capped off an incredible career with a
Conference-high 135 tackles during his senior campaign, helping the
Cardinals to a 9-2 record and an appearance in the NCAA Division II
playoffs for the first time since the 2005 season. He was
named GLIAC “Defensive Player of the Week” twice this
season, and became the GLIAC’s all-time tackles leader in
conference games (397). Jacobs tied for the GLIAC lead in
interceptions (4) and ranked sixth in tackles for loss (13).
He started all 11 games for the Cardinals in 2009 and recorded a
season high 17 tackles against Northern Michigan on Oct. 3, one of
six games in which he recorded 12 or more tackles.
McDonald anchored a Grand Valley State offensive
line that ranked third among Division II programs and led the GLIAC
in QB sacks allowed (6) in 11 games. In addition, McDonald was a
key contributor to a GVSU offense that ranked first in the GLIAC in
rushing (237.8 ypg), third in passing (227.4 ypg), first in total
offense (465.2 ypg) and second in scoring (36.9). Grand Valley
State is 48-3 during McDonald’s playing career.
Richard tallied 40 total tackles (24 solo/16
assisted), 16.5 tackles for loss (-68 yards), 10.0 QB sacks (-51
yards), three QB hurries, two pass breakups, two forced fumbles and
two blocked field goals during the 2009 season. Richard, who ranked
second in the GLIAC in both tackles for loss and QB sacks, led a
GVSU defense that ranked eighth nationally in both rushing defense
(79.8) and scoring defense (15.6).
Williams led the Oilers rushing attack by
accumulating 937 yards on 222 carries. He appeared in all 11 games
with eight starts and scored six touchdowns on the year. Williams
posted three games of 130 yards or more, recording a season-high
196 yards against Ferris State on Sept. 12, averaging 85.2 yards
per contest during his inaugural campaign.
Otterbein guided his alma mater to its best
season in 17 years in 2009, leading the Chargers to a 9-2 record
and their first-ever appearance in the NCAA Division II playoffs.
Otterbein, in his eighth season at Hillsdale College, won the 100th
game of his coaching career earlier this season. He has guided the
Chargers to three straight winning seasons, compiling the
third-best overall record in the GLIAC since 2007. Hillsdale
finished tied for second place in the GLIAC in 2009, also its best
finish in the conference since 1992.
