BAY CITY, Mich. - Saginaw Valley State University sophomore quarterback Jonathon Jennings (Columbus, Ohio/Westerville South) was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) "Offensive Player of the Week" after completing 25-of-33 passes for 338 yards and two touchdowns, while rushing for 39 yards and two more scores in SVSU's 28-20 win over No. 15 Wayne State University last Saturday. Grand Valley State University senior defensive lineman Andre Thomas ( Detroit, Mich./Denby) earned "Defensive Player of the Week Honors," while Northwood University junior punter Tony Hite (Valparaiso, Ind.) was tabbed "Special Teams Player of the Week."
Ashland - AU had five interceptions in
Saturday’s win over Findlay. The last time AU had five picks
in a game came in the final game of the 2010 season against Lake
Erie…three AU slot backs – D.J. McCoy (Cleveland,
Ohio/Collinwood), Anthony Taylor (Arlington, Va./Washington-Lee)
and Jordan McCune (Bellville, Ohio/Clear Fork) - scored touchdowns
against Findlay. The last time AU had three running backs score at
least one touchdown apiece came at Gannon in the final game of the
2007 season…junior defensive back Donnie Dottei (Toledo,
Ohio/Whitmer) had two interceptions against Findlay and has a
team-leading five picks. Dottei also had eight tackles against the
Oilers…McCoy rushed for 149 yards on 28 carries against
Findlay. That’s his second consecutive 100-yard effort and
the 13th of his career…AU has an eight-game winning streak
at Jack Miller Stadium…senior Gregg Berkshire (Ashland,
Ohio) kicked two field goals against Findlay and has 15 this
season. The school single-season record is 16. Berkshire has
done that twice.
Ferris State - FSU suffered its first home loss
of the 2011 campaign on Saturday (Oct. 29) as the Bulldogs dropped
a 24-17 setback to the Indianapolis Greyhounds at FSU’s Top
Taggart Field... The Bulldogs fell to 5-4 overall and 4-4 in league
action with their second consecutive loss while Indianapolis held
onto a share of first place in the Great Lakes Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference (GLIAC) North Division standings by improving
to 7-2 overall and 6-2 in the conference. FSU had been a
perfect 4-0 at home this season entering the game, which was played
before a “Kids Day” crowd of 2,075 fans... The
Greyhounds had 406 yards of total offense to 362 for the Bulldogs
while both teams had 22 first downs. The Bulldogs were limited to
only 73 rushing yards on 39 carries with freshman fullback Jamaal
Jackson (St. Joseph) pacing the ground game with 40 yards on 10
attempts. Senior quarterback Tom Schneider completed 24-of-39
passes for 289 yards and a score, but was sacked three times.
Findlay - The Oilers saw their three-game winning
streak stopped at Ashland on Saturday as they fell 34-19.
Junior QB Clay Belton completed 17-of-38 passing attempts for a
career-high 292 yards and three touchdowns, but also set a new
single game record with five interceptions in the loss.
Sophomore WR Seth White caught a career-high nine passes for 99
yards and a score while sophomore TE Jaryd Brown recorded four
receptions for 78 yards... Junior RB back Monterae Williams was
held to only 35 rushing yards on 13 carries in the game.
Defensively, senior safety Isaiah Ballard registered a team-high 12
tackles while junior linebacker Brandon Butler had ten.
Ballard also tallied 154 kickoff return yards on four
attempts. He had a season-long 62-yard return in the
loss.
Grand Valley State - Grand Valley State has won
five straight games since starting the season 1-3 overall and 0-3
in GLIAC action…Grand Valley State sophomore QB Heath
Parling (Plymouth, Mich./Salem) leads the nation in pass efficiency
rating (182.42) and ranks third in TD passes with 29.
Parling’s 29 TD passes ranks seventh all-time for a
single-season in GVSU history. In the last five games, Parling has
a pass efficiency rating of 220.73, is completing 67.6 percent of
his passes for 1,262 yards with 20 Tds and just one
interception…Senior DT Andre Thomas (Detroit, Mich./Denby)
has 50 tackles, 13.0 TFL, 7.5 QB sacks and nine QB hurries this
season…Fellow senior Brad Howard (Mishawaka, Ind.) leads the
team in tackles with 69, while also recording 10.5 TFL and 3.5 QB
sacks.
Hillsdale - The Hillsdale College football team
got back on the winning track with a 14-10 win over Northwood
University Saturday…The win earned the Chargers their fourth
straight winning season, the first time they have achieved that
since 1993-96…It was also Hillsdale’s third win over
Northwood in the past four meetings, the first time the Chargers
have done that since a 3-1 streak from 1994-1997…Junior RB
Joe Glendening missed the game, but senior RB Brad Spencer ran for
a career-high 97 yards in his absence... Senior Nick Hixson made
six tackles on defense and caught the game-winning 75-yard
touchdown pass that gave Hillsdale the lead for good in the fourth
quarter…The Charger defense has allowed a total of four
touchdowns in its last 12 non-overtime quarters, dating back to the
win over Michigan Tech Oct. 15…The defense also allowed a
season-low 44 passing yards.
Indianapolis - UIndy earned its first five-game
winning streak since 1998 with a 24-17 victory at Ferris State last
week...The 17 points allowed represent a season low for the Hounds
in GLIAC play…Three Greyhound defenders finished with
double-digit tackle totals – SAF John Strickland (12), LB
Mike Davis (12) and CB Jerrett Ban (11)…Sophomore Klay
Fiechter and redshirt-freshman Matt Ripp combined for 145 of
UIndy’s 188 rushing yards, with Ripp’s 57 representing
a personal best…Sophomore QB Chris Mills threw three
touchdown passes to three different receivers, while his
first-quarter interception marked just the second turnover by the
Hounds all season…Senior Ryan Forney needs 10 more receiving
yards to became the fourth-ever Greyhound to amass 1,000 yards
receiving in a season…Junior Mar’Quone Edmonds’
second-quarter TD upped his single-season program record for
receiving touchdowns to 13.
Lake Erie - The
Storm trailed 31-7 before mounting a second-half comeback Saturday
at Ohio Dominican, but ultimately fell short, 38-30, when they were
unable to recover an onside kick attempt in the final minute...
Lake Erie outgained ODU 447-365, but turned the ball over four
times... senior QB Sean Bedevelsky completed 29-of-47 passes (both
season highs) for 279 yards with two touchdowns and one
interception. He also ran for a season-high 92 yards and two
touchdowns. It was the 14th time in his career he both threw and
ran for touchdowns in the same game and was the fifth time he
rushed for two scores in a game... Bedevelsky’s 371 yards of
total offense pushed him past the 10,000-yard mark for his career
(10,139)... senior WR Brandon James reached double digits in
catches for the second straight week. He caught a game-high 11
passes for 90 yards, including a touchdown, and went over the
200-receptions mark for his career (202). The touchdown grab was
also the 20th of his career.
Michigan Tech - Wide receiver Steve Worthy (Detroit, Mich./Renaissance) tied a school record with three receiving touchdowns in Tech’s 24-20 loss at Grand Valley State last Saturday (Oct. 29). The senior had nine catches for 165 yards in the contest. The three effort tied a school record held by five others—most recently Keith White at Winona State on Aug. 25, 2007 … Tech’s last three losses have come by a combined 13 points … The Huskies’ defense held Grand Valley State, which had averaged 58 points in its previous four games, to just 24 points. Only three teams have scored more than 16 points against Tech this season … Senior Ian Coughlin (Royal Oak, Mich./Bishop Foley) posted a game-high 13 tackles vs. GVSU including nine solos, three tackles for loss and a sack. The linebacker ranks second on the team in tackles this season with 64 … Senior Todd Storm (Calumet, Mich.) had a sack on Grand Valley State’s second play from scrimmage. It was his sixth sack of the season and 17th of his career—third most all-time at Tech … Freshman Tyler Scarlett (Clarkston, Mich.) eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for passing yards this season with 278 at Grand Valley last Saturday. Scarlett is just the fourth different QB in school history to ever reach the 2,000-yard plateau. At 2,003 yards, he is just 192 yards shy of breaking Steve Short’s (2002-06) school passing record of 2,194 … Tech will play its first home game since Oct. 15 with this Saturday’s (Nov. 5) tilt vs. Ferris State.
Northern Michigan - NMU snapped its 5-game losing
streak with a 59-3 victory over Tiffin University on Saturday (Oct.
29) afternoon from the Superior Dome…It was the most points
NMU has scores since Sept. 12, 2009 when the ‘Cats put up 62
against Tiffin…It was the first time all season that NMU had
the advantage in time of possession…Eight different Wildcats
scored touchdowns …Brandon Parson tied a Superior Dome
record with two interceptions …Morgan Stenz had a 97-yard
fumble return for a touchdown…Cody Scepaniak, Nick Awrey,
Brent Parrett, Junior Michel and Parson all scored their first
touchdowns of the season…Carter Kopach finished 14-of-20 for
131 yards and two touchdowns through the air and rushed for 55
yards.
Northwood - NU dropped a 14-10 contest at
Hillsdale Saturday afternoon (October 29) … the star of the
game for Northwood proved to be junior punter Tony Hite
(Valparaiso, Ind.) … he averaged 48.8 yards per punt over
four punts at Hillsdale … Hite’s only punt that
traveled less 50 yards was downed at the one yard line … His
net punting average for the game was 46.2 yards … Carlos
Love (Romulus, Mich./Gibraltar Carlson) led the NU defensive
effort, finishing with 10 tackles and an interception … his
interception came in the first quarter and took place at the
Hillsdale two-yard line … Aaron Shavers (Detroit,
Mich./Inkster) scored Northwood’s lone TD of the game, which
came on an eight-yard run that put the Timberwolves up 10-7 in the
third quarter.
Ohio Dominican - Ohio Dominican’s football team racked up 38 points in a 19:52 stretch of play to score its second straight win, a 38-30 victory over Lake Erie…The Panthers have scored 100 points in the past two games and the defense has forced nine turnovers…ODU has attempted at least 45 rushes in six of nine games and 51 or more in four games…Jeremy Fudge accounted for a career-high five TDs, including a career-high three passing scores…Mike Noffsinger became the first back in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season as he now has 1,030…Justin Bell (14) and Cody Culbertson (13) both had career highs in tackles, and Culbertson also had his first career interception.
Saginaw Valley State - SVSU picked up its second straight win against a ranked team, this time knocking off No. 15 Wayne State by a score of 28-20. The victory moves the Cardinals record to 6-2 overall on the season and into a first place tie in the GLIAC, setting up two important games to close out the season. The Cardinals improved their record at Wayne State to 15-2 all-time. The offense had a solid afternoon amassing 512 yards of total offense against a defense that was allowing just 331 yards a game. Sophomore quarterback Jonathon Jennings picked apart the Warriors, throwing for a career high 338 yards on 25-of-33 passing with a pair of touchdowns through the air to extend his streak to eight straight game this season with at least two touchdowns. He would also add two rushing touchdowns on the afternoon as he rushed for 39 yards on nine carries. Sophomore receiver Jeff Janis caught five passes for 109 yards and two second quarter touchdowns that sent the Cardinals into halftime with a 21-17 advantage.
Tiffin - Tiffin University committed 7 turnovers at Northern Michigan, leading to a 59-3 defeat at the Superior Dome. Tiffin had 5 interceptions and 2 fumbles leading to 17 Wildcats points…Tiffin’s only points of the day came on a 33 yard Seth Pekoe field goal as time expired in the first half…Dan Pitts finished completing 18 of 43 passes with 4 interceptions for 255 yards. Brendton Williams was the prime beneficiary in receiving yards, totaling 121 yards on 5 catches. Obadiah Dykes had 35 yards receiving with 3 catches, while Marcus Beaurem had 33 receiving yards and 140 all purpose yards…Rennick Dutton led the Dragons with 10 tackles while Logan Snell and Theron Carter had 9 tackles for apiece. Dewon Tufts had 8 tackles on the line while Michael Gomez also had 6 tackles.
Wayne State - Wayne State had its six-game home
field winning streak end ... senior Josh Renel (Rochester Hills,
Mich./Rochester Adams) garnered 177 all-purpose yards on 51
rushing, 28 receiving and 98 on kickoff returns to move past Joe
Gough (1991-94) for second place on WSU’s all-time chart for
all-purpose yards with 4,573 ... Joique Bell of the New Orleans
Saints has the school record at 8,055 ... senior linebacker Zach
Easterly (Southfield, Mich./Cass Tech) made a career-high 11
tackles (9 solo, 2 assisted), including one for loss in his first
start of the year ... senior wide receiver Troy Burrell (Port
Huron, Mich.) extended his reception streak to 31 as hed led the
Warriors in receptions (5) and receiving yards (49) vs. SVSU ...
sophomore kicker Stefan Terleckyj (Warren, Mich. / Warren Mott)
averaged a career-best 45.4 yards on seven punts with five inside
the 20 (four inside the 10), and only allowed a total of -1 yards
in punt returns ... he also recovered an onside kickoff.
