GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following week two of the 2019 football season. Ferris State senior quarterback Jayru Campbell earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while Grand Valley senior linebacker Isaiah Nikansah captured GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition along with Davenport's sophomore kicker Chris Ahmed who claimed GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jayru Campbell - Ferris State
Ferris State University senior quarterback Jayru Campbell returned to the lineup in a big way, leading the #2 Bulldogs to a decisive 62-28 win over Central Washington in the NCAA Division II National Game of the Week on Saturday night in Ellensburg, Wash. Campbell and the Bulldogs won the longest trip in school history (2,039 miles) and beat a team which had taken FCS Idaho to the wire only the week before by compiling 627 yards of total offense. Campbell threw for 271 yards on 17-of-29 passing for three scores while adding 42 rushing yards on 13 tries. His scoring throws included a key 72-yard TD pass to receiver Xavier Wade on the first play after CWU had trimmed a 20-point deficit down to only six points. It fueled a 28-point Bulldog fourth quarter run to put the game away. His play helped the Bulldogs compile 28 first downs and FSU finished 10-of-19 (53%) on third down conversions to move to 2-0 on the year.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Isaiah Nikansah - Grand Valley
Grand Valley State senior Isaiah Nkansah recorded a career-high and the third-best, single-game total tackle in GVSU football history with 20 stops (6 solo/14 assisted), while adding two tackles for loss (-10) and two QB sacks (-10) in the Lakers 28-24 comeback win over Delta State. Nkansah played a key role in the Lakers? defense holding Delta State to three consecutive field goal attempts (2 missed/1 blocked) and a fourth quarter goal line stand from the 1-yard line that netted -3 yards. His two QB sacks came at crucial times, the second on a third down when DSU needed a first down to keep a drive alive late in the fourth quarter.
SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Chris Ahmed - Davenport
Tallying 7 of Davenport's 13 points, Ahmed connected on both his field-goal attempts and his only PAT try in DU's 13-9 win at Lake Erie. He made from 26 yards and 41 yards both in the second quarter. The 41-yarder is his second longest and gave DU a 13-3 lead into half.
