GVSU's Reid, MTU's Tidwell & Gornick Claim GLIAC Football Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following week six of the 2019 football season. Grand Valley St. freshman running back  Tariq Reid garnered GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors, while  Michigan Tech Senior defensive back Travis Tidwell earned GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition along with teamate placekicker Evan Gornick who was awarded GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK:  Tariq Reid - Grand Valley St.

Redshirt Freshman running back Tariq Reid has been named GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in the Lakers’ 35-28 win in the Battle of the Valleys contest at Lubbers Stadium before a crowd of 13,180. Reid, who rushed for 287 yards and three TDs on 39 carries, etched his name in the GVSU single-game record books. His 287-yard rushing effort is now second on the all-time single-game list, while his 39 carries ranks. Both marks are freshman single-game records.  fifth. Making his first collegiate start, Reid entered the game with nine carries for 56 yards in two games. He rushed 14 times for 105 yards in the first half, followed by a 182-yard effort on 25 carries in the second half. His TD runs covered 21, 5 and 1 yard.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Travis Tidwell - Michigan Tech

Senior Travis Tidwell had a big game on defense for the Huskies in Saturday's 24-20 win over Northern Michigan. Tidwell matched a season high with 10 tackles, forced a fumble, and had two pass breakups. On a Glacier Wallington interception, Tidwell knocked the ball up in the air, allowing Wallington to make the pick. Six of his stops were solo tackles and one of them was a tackle for a loss. Tidwell leads the Huskies in tackles this year with 39, has an interception, five pass breakups and two forced fumbles. He is averaging 7.8 tackles per game this season.

 

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Evan Gornick - Michigan Tech

Evan Gornick, a senior placekicker from Fenton, Michigan, had a big week for the Huskies kicking the football in a 24-20 win over Northern Michigan. Gornick connected on all three of his extra points and made a 29—yard field goal to give Tech a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter of Saturday’s game. Gornick also kicked off five times for 238 total yards and had one touchback during the contest. On the season, Gornick has made four field goal attempts and 10 extra points while averaging 55 yards per kickoff with five touchbacks.
