FSU's Mitchell and Murphy, DU's Barnett named GLIAC Football Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following the opening week of 2022 football season. Ferris State junior quarterback Mylik Mitchell earned GLIAC Offensive Player of the Week honors while teammate, junior defensive end Caleb Murphy, captured GLIAC Defensive Player of the Week recognition. Davenport graduate student Sy Barnett claimed GLIAC Special Teams Player of the Week accolades.


OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Mylik Mitchell, Ferris State

Ferris State University junior quarterback Mylik Mitchell had an impressive debut for the top-ranked Bulldogs as FSU recorded its 39th consecutive regular-season victory with a 36-20 opening night win over Central Washington on Thursday at Top Taggart Field. Mitchell threw for 339 yards on 19-of-29 (65.5%) passing in the victory while also rushing for a team-high 34 yards on 18 attempts. He completed a 64-yard touchdown throw to give FSU the early advantage and added a two-yard TD run in the third to push the margin to two scores. His play helped the Bulldog offense generate 494 total yards in the win and he led FSU on five scoring drives in the contest.


DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Caleb Murphy, Ferris State

Ferris State University junior All-America defensive end Caleb Murphy had a big game for the top-ranked Bulldogs in the season opener on Thursday night, totaling team-high numbers in tackles, sacks and tackles for loss in a 36-20 win over Central Washington, which reached the D2 Playoffs a season ago. Murphy finished with 10 tackles, three tackles for loss (-10 yards) and 1.5 sacks (-9 yards) while also garnering three quarterback hurries in the victory. His play helped the FSU defense limit the Wildcats to only 227 yards for the game and only seven second-half points, which came on a short field. The Bulldogs also generated five quarterback sacks in the triumph for their 39th consecutive regular-season victory dating back to 2017.


SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sy Barnett, Davenport

Sy Barnett in his first game at Davenport managed 99 receiving yards and two touchdowns including the game-winning catch with 2:11 left in the game. He also punted the ball three times for an average of 48.3 yards including a school record 75-yard punt. He also kicked off twice and had two punt returns for 22 yards.
