GVSU's Peterson, FSU's Payoute and DU's Barnett named GLIAC Football Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced its weekly awards following week 10 of the 2022 football season. Grand Valley State junior quarterback Cade Peterson received offensive player of the week recognition, Ferris State redshirt freshman defensive back Justin Payoute was named defensive player of the week and Davenport graduate student punter/receiver Sy Barnett earned the special teams honor.

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Cade Peterson, Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State junior QB Cade Peterson completed 13-of-19 passes for 182 yards and two TDs, while rushing for 73 yards and two TDs in the Lakers' 42-14 victory over Wayne State. Peterson accounted for 255 yards of total offense and four touchdowns in winds of 25-40 miles per hour and rain that was coming down sideways out of the South. Leading 7-0 and going into the wind with :51 seconds left in the first half Peterson raced 52 yards to the WSU 28, completed a 13-yard pass and then scored on a 4-yard TD run with :03 seconds left in the first half to give GVSU a 14-0 lead. Peterson then led three scoring drives in the third quarter, including a 23-yard TD run and two touchdown passes.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Justin Payoute, Ferris State

Ferris State University redshirt freshman defensive back Justin Payoute made his first career start a memorable one for the Bulldogs on Saturday, helping lead FSU to a 28-7 win over #13 Davenport in a top 15 national showdown at Top Taggart Field. In the Bulldogs' regular-season home finale, Payoute picked off a first quarter pass and raced 43 yards to the end zone on the pick six for his first collegiate score, giving FSU the early momentum and a lead the Bulldogs would not relinquish. He finished the game as one of Ferris State's top tacklers with seven stops, including three solo hits, and also came up with a tackle for loss as the Bulldogs limited DU to less than 200 yards of total offense and only 24 rushing yards in the victory. With the win, the Bulldogs kept their postseason playoff hopes alive and moved to 8-1 overall this year

SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sy Barnett, Davenport

Sy Barnett is receiving this award for the second time this season after a Week One honor at Truman State. The Panthers have now won this award four times in 10 weeks this season. Barnett averaged 44 yards on six punts including a school-record 87 yard boot that went from end zone to end zone in the first quarter. He pinned two punts inside the 20-yard line and his 87-yarder was the fourth punt of over 50 yards this season. Barnett also caught six passes for 70 yards against his former team and became the single-season record holder in receptions (45) and receiving yards (619) at Davenport.
