BAY CITY, Mich. -- Junior forward
Justin Keenan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Ottawa Hills)
of Ferris State University has been selected as the Great Lakes
Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) men’s basketball
“Player of the Year.” Rookie guard Chris
Webb (Saginaw, Mich./Arthur Hill) of Saginaw Valley State
University was chosen as “Freshman of the Year,” while
SVSU head coach Frankie Smith earned GLIAC
“Coach of the Year” honors. All three were selected by
the GLIAC men’s basketball coaches in conjunction with
all-conference balloting.
Keenan, a consensus preseason All-America
honoree, paced the GLIAC in scoring this past season for the second
consecutive campaign. Keenan averaged 20.3 points per game,
including a 21.1 points per game figure in conference action. His
465 points in league games finished only six shy of matching the
league’s single-season scoring record. The 6-6 Keenan also
broke two GLIAC seasonal efforts with his 176 made free throws and
253 total attempts in GLIAC encounters while becoming the
school’s all-time leader in career made free throws (547) and
topping his own single-season record with 200 makes at the charity
stripe.
Keenan helped the Bulldogs to a second consecutive conference
tournament berth after leading the league with 13 scoring games of
20 points or more. He claimed GLIAC North Division Player of the
Week accolades four-straight weeks and reached double-figure
scoring in all but one contest this campaign. In addition to
leading the league in scoring, Keenan also concluded the
regular-season ranked first in offensive rebounds (3.1 pg.) along
with third in field goal percentage (56.5%) and fifth in total
rebounding (6.6 rpg.). This year marked the third-straight year
Keenan has led the GLIAC in both made free throws and attempts.
Webb finished fourth among Cardinals in scoring
(10.4 ppg), lead the team in three point percentage (.423) and was
second on the team in steals (1.32 spg), while shooting .405
percent from the floor in his rookie campaign. He was second on the
team in minutes played with 33.5 per contest while starting 27 of
SVSU’s 28 games. Webb ranks fifth in the GLIAC in three-point
percentage, ninth in minutes played and was regarded as one of the
Cardinals’ best on the ball defenders during the 2009-10
campaign. Webb recorded a career-high 23 points at Tiffin
University on Feb. 13, 2010.
Smith lead the Cardinals to a 13-9 record in
regular season conference play this season, marking the first time
in which SVSU qualified for postseason play since the 1998-99
campaign. Overall, Smith has posted a career record of 36-43 during
his three-year tenure with Saginaw Valley, guiding the Cardinals to
their first 16-win season since the 1997-98 campaign. SVSU’s
six-game winning streak in the middle of the season was it’s
longest since the 1984-85 season when they rattled off 12 straight
victories.
Joining Keenan on the All-GLIAC North Division First Team are:
senior guard Scott Perkins of Lake Superior State
University; junior guard/forward Justin Ringler of
