BAY CITY, Mich. - Northwood University senior forward Bobby Lewis (Saginaw, Mich./Mott C.C.) and Tiffin University senior forward Travis Spahr (Gahanna, Ohio/Lincoln) have been chosen as the GLIAC Men's Basketball North and South Division "Players of the Week", respectively.

Senior forward Bobby Lewis led
Northwood to a 2-0 start to the season over the weekend, averaging
24.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game. He shot
68.0 percent from the floor (17-25), 66.7 percent from 3-point
range (4-6) and 90.9 percent from the foul line (10-11). He
opened the year by scoring 25 points while grabbing six rebounds
against Illinois-Springfield. Lewis then had 24 points and
nine rebounds while going 8-10 from the floor against Missouri-St.
Louis.

Senior forward Travis Spahr led the Dragons to a 2-0 start to the 2011-12 campaign by averaging 13.5 and 12.5 rebounds over his first two games. Spahr opened the season by posting his first career back-to-back doubles with a 15-point, 14-rebound performance in a win over Ohio State Unversity-Mansfield. He then 12 points and 11 rebounds in a win over the University of Cincinnati-Clermont. Spahr added four blocks and two steals in the two contests while shooting 60 percent (12-20) from the floor.

Ashland Eagles
The Eagles open the season at Lock Haven on Monday (Nov. 14). This is the first meeting between the schools…AU will close the week with two games at the Ohio Dominican Classic. Ashland will play Central State and Lourdes at that event. Ashland went 2-0 against Lourdes last season.
Ferris State Bulldogs
FSU officially opened its 2011-12 campaign by taking on two in-state Division I opponents on back-to-back nights this past weekend. FSU fell to Michigan by a 59-33 count in the season opener on Friday (Nov. 11) night at the renovated Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. The Bulldogs then suffered a 65-60 setback to Central Michigan in Saturday’s (Nov. 12) second game at McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant... FSU trailed Michigan by just five points with 10 minutes to go in Friday’s contest. It was only an eight-point game with roughly eight minutes to play before the Wolverines seized control... On Saturday, the Bulldogs missed their first 12 shots from the floor at CMU and trailed 18-2 nine minutes into the game before rallying back. FSU cut the margin to two points with 25 seconds to play, but the Chippewas were able to win the contest at the free throw line... Ferris State posted a 1-2 mark in exhibition play this campaign as the Bulldogs beat defending NCCAA National Champion Grace Bible and dropped road contests at Division I Michigan State and Calvin.
Findlay
Oilers
The #7 Oilers extended their home
winning streak to 71 games with a 92-62 win over Ohio Valley on
Saturday. The win was also Findlay’s 105th straight
regular season victory in Croy Gymnasium. The Oilers set a
new school record with 63 rebounds in the game, which included 21
offensive boards. They also blocked nine shots and held a
62-22 advantage in points in the paint. Sophomore forward
Greg Kahlig led the way with 18 points while senior guard Kyle
Caiola registered 13 points, eight assists and five rebounds.
Senior forward Rob Marsden added 12 points and five boards while
sophomore forward Mark Frilling recorded a career-high 11 points,
six rebounds and four blocks in the win.
Grand Valley State Lakers
GVSU opens the season on Wednesday night (Nov. 16) at home against Michigan-Dearborn before hosting #1 Bellarmine on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 19) at 3:00 p.m…the Lakers’ only exhibition contest in 2011 was at Iowa State on Nov. 6, with the Cyclones prevailing 77-62. GVSU trailed by just 10 points with seven minutes to play, while forcing 14 ISU turnovers (the Lakers committed just 10 miscues). James Thomas (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids C.C.) led the team with 16 points, while point guard Breland Hogan (Taylor, Mich./Kennedy) added 13 points, four rebounds, and four assists. Senior Nick Waddell (Chicago, Ill./New Mexico J.C.) also reached double-digits with 12 points and five boards.
Hillsdale Chargers
The Hillsdale College men's basketball team got the 2011-12 season off to a positive start Friday night with a 65-31 win over the University of Michigan-Dearborn at Jesse Philips Arena... The Chargers, now 1-0 on the season, head to St. Joseph's College next week before returning home for two more non-league games before the Thanksgiving holiday... Hillsdale played a tight defensive game, limiting the Wolves to 11 made field goals in the entire game, and 29 percent shooting overall... The Chargers held the Wolves to just 14 second-half points, and put together a consistent effort, particularly on defense. Eleven players played at least 10 minutes each for Hillsdale. The Chargers came up with 20 steals as a team, led by five from sophomore forward Tim Dezelski...Senior Brent Eaton led the Chargers with 13 points in the game. Four different players - Nick Washburn, Tyler Gerber, Darius Ware and Dezelski - had eight points each. Senior John Bagge led the team with five rebounds off the bench, and Tony Nelson chipped in with six points off the bench.
Lake Erie Storm
Lake Erie College opened its
2011-12 campaign with a 95-57 loss at NCAA Division I University of
Detroit Mercy Friday. The Storm led 6-0 four minutes into the
contest and held the lead eight minutes into the game. Lake
Erie was led by sophomore center Rich Austin (Cleveland, Ohio/ St.
Ignatius) with career-high 21 points on eight-of-13 shooting,
including a career-high three three-pointers. Sophomore guard
Nate Tait (South Euclid, Ohio/Brush/Alderson-Broaddus) also reached
double figures in his first game as a member of the Storm with 10
points. Lake Erie will play its next six contests all at home,
including Tuesday against Salem International and Saturday vs.
Malone.
Lake Superior State Lakers
Four Lakers averaged in double
figures as LSSU opened the season with a 2-0 finish at the
Timberwolf Classic hosted by Northwood. Senior guard Kyle Hunt
(Macomb, Mich.), who was named to the pre-season All-GLIAC First
Team, led in scoring at 16.0 points per game and added 5.5 assists.
Junior forward Derek Kinney (Romulus, Mich.) followed at 11.5
points and 12.5 rebounds per game. Kinney recorded double doubles
in both contests, including a career-high 14 rebounds during a
74-66 victory over Illinois-Springfield. Sophomore guard Derek
Billing (Anna, Ohio) contributed 10.5 points, 6.0 assists and 3.0
steals per game, and freshman guard Alex Williams (Benton Harbor,
Mich.) added 10.0 points per game. The Lakers will meet Edgewood
for the first time in school history during this weekend’s
Merrill Thompson Memorial Classic hosted by Wisconsin-Superior. The
Lakers will play either Finlandia or UW-Superior in the second
game. They are 53-2 all-time against Finlandia and 1-0 all-time
against UW-Superior.
Michigan Tech. Huskies
Michigan Tech opened the 2011-12
season with a heartbreaking 81-80 loss at home to Minn. Duluth. The
Bulldogs have defeated the Huskies the last three times the two
schools have met. Junior Ali Haidar scored a team-high 21 points,
and sophomore Alex Culy chipped in 18. The Huskies shot just 60
percent (14-23) from the free throw line. Tech will host another
Northern Sun opponent Minnesota State Saturday (Nov. 19).
Northern Michigan Wildcats
The Northern
Michigan men’s basketball team defeated UW-Superior 81-55 in
its home opener…The Wildcats were led by senior guard
DeAndre Taylor with 20 points and six rebounds… Freshman
forward Haki Stampley had 18 points and three rebounds in his first
collegiate start… NMU hosts Lewis University on Tuesday
(Nov. 15).
Northwood Timberwolves
Northwood opened its 2011-12 season
with a pair of home wins, defeating Illinois-Springfield 75-70
before downing Missouri-St. Louis 75-71 … the Timberwolves
shot the ball extremely well for the week, shooting 51.9 percent
from the floor (55-106) and 48.5 percent from 3-point range (16-33)
… Bobby Lewis (Saginaw, Mich.) opened his senior season
strong, averaging 24.0 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per
game … he shot 68.0 percent from the floor (17-25), 66.7
percent from 3-point range (4-6) and 90.9 percent from the foul
line (10-11) … Lewis started the year by scoring 25 points
while grabbing six rebounds against Illinois-Springfield …
he then had 24 points and nine rebounds while going 8-10 from the
floor … junior Booker Stoudmire (Ypsilanti,
Mich./Belleville) also had a good start for NU, averaging 14.5
points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game … Stoudmire
shot 61.1 percent from the floor for the week (11-18) … the
Timberwolves will host Northwood (FL) Monday night before traveling
to Wisconsin-Parkside to take on Minnesota-Duluth and Parkside.
Ohio Dominican Panthers
ODU scored a historic victory in
its season opener, knocking off Division I Southern Illinois 64-63
Saturday night in Carbondale…It was the Panthers’
first victory over a Division I team, dating back to 1984-85 when
year-by-year records were available…ODU led by as many as
seven points in the second half and knocked down four free throws
in the final minute to seal the win…Morgan Jones led the
team with 15 points and also registered five steals, Don Kellum was
a perfect 4-of-4 from the field for a career-high 11
points…ODU’s bench scored 27 points in the
win…The Panthers then fell to Southern Indiana, the No. 12
team in the country, on Sunday. ODU shot just 39 percent while the
Screaming Eagles knocked down over 51 percent from the
floor…Aaron Gibbs had a game-high 10 boards to pace the
Panthers.
Saginaw Valley State Cardinals
The Saginaw Valley State University
men’s basketball team opened the 2011-12 season with an 85-71
loss to No. 1 Bellarmine. The Cardinals were led by Greg
Foster, Michael Fugate and Chris Webb who combined to score 63 of
the Cardinals 71 points on the afternoon. Foster would lead
SVSU in scoring with 25, while Fugate and Webb dropped in 23 and 15
respectively. The Cardinals shot 41.7% from the floor on
25-of-60 shooting and 80% (16-of-20) from the charity stripe.
SVSU forward Jay Thames led all players with 10 rebounds, as
Saginaw Valley dropped the rebounding battle, 36-35. The
Cardinals also forced the Knights into 12 turnovers. After
entering the locker room trailing by a score of 44-26, SVSU
outscored Bellarmine the rest of the game by a score of 45-41.
Tiffin Dragons
Senior Travis Spahr had 15 points, 14 rebounds and blocked three shots as the Tiffin University men's basketball team (1-0) opened the 2011-12 season with a 105-46 win over Ohio State University-Mansfield (1-3), Friday evening at the Gillmor Center... Sophomore Joe Graessle scored 23 points and senior Karl Finley had 15 points as the Tiffin University men's basketball team (2-0) remained undefeated with a 90-75 win over Cincinnati Clermont (3-3), Sunday afternoon at the Gillmor Center... Against OUS-Mansfield, the Dragon defense was outstanding holding the Mavericks to 26.5% shooting from the floor, outrebounded them 59-28 and had 18 steals off 25 turnovers ... Joe Graessle hit a season-high six three-pointers ... First time since 2005-06 that TU has started 2-0. Tiffin hits the road, Thursday, Nov. 17 as they travel to Fairbanks, Alaska to compete in the GCI Alaska Invitational. TU will take on Lindenwood in a game scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m.
Wayne State Warriors
Wayne State begins the 2011-12 campaign at home this Thursday against the defending national champion Bellarmine Knights … WSU won the last home meeting vs. BU in double overtime (84-74) on Nov. 21, 2009 … The Warriors suffered a 47-39 setback at Michigan in its lone exhibition contest on Nov. 4 … senior center Ike Udanoh led WSU with a double-double against the Wolverines by scoring 13 points and adding 10 rebounds … newcomer Cole Prophet added nine points vs. UM … WSU will also host Marygrove College on Nov. 21 before heading to Springfield, Mo., for the Drury Tournament on Nov. 25-26.
