Reese’s Division II All-Star Game Coaches

One of only three head coaches to win national championships at two different levels, Larry Gipson began his collegiate coaching career as an assistant to famed coach Nolan Richardson at the University of Tulsa. He won his first national title at Northeastern Oklahoma A&M, leading the Golden Norseman to the 1989 national junior college championship. In 1999, Gipson was named head coach at the University of Toledo where his teams had a 68-73 record in five seasons before he moved on to Northeastern State (OK) University. In 17 seasons, Gipson led the RiverHawks to five NCAA tournament appearances and with a 32-3 record in 2002-03, NSU won the NCAA Division II national championship.  When he retired following the 2013014 season, he had a 280-201 record at Northeastern State and an overall head coaching record of 565-361.  A three-time national coach of the year, Gipson was a Division II representative for many years on the board of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and served as NABC president in 2012-13.

The nephew of legendary Oklahoma A&M coach Henry Iba, Gene Iba played basketball at the University of Tulsa for his father, Clarence Iba. After coaching high school basketball in St. Louis, Iba moved to college coaching as an assistant under hall of fame coach Don Haskins at UTEP for five seasons.  His first head coaching position was at Houston Baptist University.  The Trans American Athletic Conference coach of the year in 1981, he guided the Huskies to the 1984 NCAA tournament.  Iba left HBU after eight seasons to become the head coach at Baylor.  In seven seasons as the Bears’ head coach, he had a 98-106 record with postseason tournament berths in 1987 and 1988.  He was named head coach at Pittsburg State (KS) in 1995 and led the Gorillas to three NCAA Division II tournaments in his first four seasons, including a berth in the 1997 Sweet Sixteen.  In 15 seasons, he had a 261-172 record, retiring from coaching in 2010.  Iba’s overall won-lost record as a head coach is 487-374.

About the National Association of Basketball Coaches

Located in Kansas City, Missouri, the NABC was founded in 1927 by Forrest “Phog” Allen, the legendary basketball coach at the University of Kansas.  Allen, a student of James Naismith, the inventor of basketball, organized coaches into this collective group to serve as Guardians of the Game.  The NABC currently has nearly 5,000 members consisting primarily of university and college men’s basketball coaches.  All members of the NABC are expected to uphold the core values of being a Guardian of the Game by bringing attention to the positive aspects of the sport of basketball and the role coaches play in the academic and athletic lives of today’s student-athletes.  The four core values of being a Guardian of the Game are advocacy, leadership, service and education.  Additional information about the NABC, its programs and membership, can be found at www.nabc.org.
