Williams Tabbed as LSSU's Second-Consecutive USBWA Division II Player of the Week

ST. LOUIS (USBWA) – Lake Superior State sophomore point guard Akaemji Williams has been named the U.S. Basketball Writers Association Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Week after being named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference North Division Player of the Week on Monday.

Williams is the second consecutive LSSU player to win the national honor after his teammate, Devin Daly, won the school's first-ever USBWA Division II Men's Basketball Player of the Week last week.

The 5-8, Rochester, Mich. native averaged 25.5 points to help lead No. 25-ranked Lakers (7-1, 4-0 GLIAC) to a pair of conference wins over Malone University and Walsh University.

The Lakers currently sit tied with Saginaw Valley atop the GLIAC standings with a perfect 4-0 record in conference games. The Cardinals are 3-0 in GLIAC games

Williams scored 51 points in two games, and added 4.5 assists, 3.0 rebounds, and 2.0 steals per game. In the 90-75 win at Malone, he scored a career-high 32 points, and he followed that up with a 19-point, four-rebound, six-assist performance in a 67-46 win at Walsh. For the week, he hit 57 percent (17-of-30) from the field, including six-of-12 three-pointers, and he knocked down 11-of-14 (79 percent) free throws.

The Lakers host Algoma University on Thursday at 7 p.m. before hosting Silver Lake College at 3 p.m. on Saturday.
