GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following week eleven of the 2019-20 men's basketball season. Michigan Tech junior guard Kyle Monroe earned GLIAC Men's Basketball North Division Player of the Week honors, while Grand Valley St. junior forward Jake Van Tubbergen was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week.
NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kyle Monroe - Michigan Tech
Kyle Monroe had a huge week for the Huskies, setting a single game Tech and GLIAC record for points with 53 at Grand Valley State Thursday night. He followed that up with 23 points in a 69-61 victory at Davenport on Saturday. Monroe made good on 27 of 40 shots from the field (67.5%) and converted 13 of 18 chances from three-point range (72.2%). In addition, Monroe combined for 12 rebounds and dished out three assists. On the season, Monroe leads the Huskies and the GLIAC with a 22.8 points per game scoring average. He is also averaging 6.4 rebounds per game this season.
SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Van Tubbergen - Grand Valley St.
For the fifth time this season, and second consecutive week, GVSU junior Jake Van Tubbergen has been named GLIAC South Player of the Week. Van Tubbergen had a pair of double-doubles to lead the Lakers to a thrilling win over Michigan Tech Thursday before a ferocious comeback that fell just short on Saturday in a two-point loss against Northern Michigan. Van Tubbergen scored 25 points and snagged 12 rebounds as the Lakers erased a 13-point deficit with 6:00 left in regulation to upend Michigan Tech, 95-93, on Thursday evening. He then reached the 30-point mark for the second time this season and matched his career high in rebounding with a 30-point, 16-board performance as the Lakers nearly erased another late deficit, coming from down 15 to have a potential game-winning three at the buzzer, but fell 75-73 to snap a six-game winning streak. Van Tubbergen’s 11 double-doubles ranks fifth in the nation, three shy of the lead, while he ranks ninth in the nation with a GLIAC-best 10.3 rebounds per game.
