MTU's Monroe, GVSU's Van Tubbergen Named Men's Basketball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following week 15 of the 2019-20 men's basketball season. Michigan Tech senior guard Kyle Monroe was named GLIAC Men's Basketball North Division Player of the Week, while Grand Valley State senior forward Jake Van Tubbergen earned GLIAC South Division Player of the Week honors.

NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Kyle Monroe - Michigan Tech

Kyle Monroe had a great week again for the Huskies, leading Tech to a pair of key wins in the GLIAC. He averaged 35.0 points per game, including a high of 41 points in a 78-70 win over No. 21 Grand Valley State. Monroe has now combined for 94 points against the Lakers after pouring in 53 points at GVSU earlier this season. In addition to scoring, Monroe logged two double-doubles on the strength of 10 and 11 rebounds respectively. His shooting percentage stands at 55.0% for the week and at the free throw line he cashed in 20 of 25 attempts combined in the two games (80.0%). On the season, Monroe is averaging 22.8 points per game and 6.9 rebounds per contest. He is also closing in on 2,500 career points with 2,446 heading into this week's game at Northern Michigan.

SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Van Tubbergen - Grand Valley State

Jake Van Tubbergen has earned his sixth GLIAC South Player of the Week this season after a sensational weekend to help the Lakers split their trip to the Upper Peninsula. He scored a career-high 39 points on 15-23 shooting and 11-15 at the free throw line while securing 13 rebounds and two steals to lead the Lakers to a double-overtime win at Northern Michigan Thursday night. His 39 points were the most by a Laker in a single game since 1997. He followed that up with 27 points and 14 rebounds with a pair of steals in a tough loss at Michigan Tech on Saturday. Van Tubbergen now ranks third in the GLIAC in points per game and field goal percentage while leading the conference in rebounding average. His 14 double-doubles are most in the GLIAC and rank ninth nationally to lead the Lakers to their seventh GLIAC divisional title (previous six had all been Northern Division) and first since the 2009-10 season.
