FSU's Kelser, GVSU's Van Tubbergen Named Men's Basketball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following week six of the 2019-20 men's basketball season. Ferris State junior guard Walt Kelser earned GLIAC Men's Basketball North Division Player of the Week honors, while Grand Valley St. junior guard Jake Van Tubbergen was named GLIAC South Division Player of the Week.


NORTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Walt Kelser- Ferris State

Ferris State University junior guard Walt Kelser had a huge day as the nationally-ranked Bulldogs beat Lake Superior State 97-86 on the road to stay perfect in the GLIAC on Saturday afternoon. Kelser totaled a game and season-high 34 points on 13-of-18 shooting (72%), including a six-of-10 (60%) effort behind the three-point stripe as FSU improved to a nation-leading 13-1 on the year. He added two rebounds and a steal as Ferris State won its third-straight GLIAC contest to start conference play.


SOUTH PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Van Tubbergen - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State’s Jake Van Tubbergen has been named the GLIAC South Player of the Week for the third time this season. Van Tubbergen stuffed the stat sheet to help the Lakers rally late to knock off defending GLIAC regular season champions Davenport, 79-69, at the DU Student Center on Saturday. Van Tubbergen recorded his sixth double-double of the season, scoring 23 points on 9-16 shooting, collecting 12 rebounds and dishing six assists to lead the Lakers. This was also the sixth time this season the junior has eclipsed the 20-point mark in just 10 games. The Lakers, who received votes in the national poll last week, have won six straight game and head into 2020 with a 3-0 record in conference play. They will host Grace Christian on Wednesday (Dec. 18) in the final game of 2019 before the holiday break.
