FSU's Kelser and GVSU's Van Tubbergen named GLIAC Men's Basketball Players of the Week

GLIAC -- The Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) has announced weekly awards following Week 2 of the men's basketball season. Ferris State redshirt senior guard Walt Kelser claimed GLIAC North Division Player of the Week, while Grand Valley State senior forward Jake Van Tubbergen was selected as GLIAC South Division Player of the Week. 


NORTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Walt Kelser - Ferris State

Ferris State University senior guard Walt Kelser continued his impressive early-season play, leading the Bulldogs to a pair of big regional wins this week as FSU improved to 4-0 on the year. Kelser averaged a team-leading 23.5 points and shot 49% from the floor in the two contests against strong regional opponents. The senior standout tallied 21 points and knocked down five threes on Wednesday night in a decisive 89-58 triumph over nationally seventh-ranked Hillsdale on the road. He then came back on Saturday to score a game-high 26 points with eight rebounds, three assists and two steals in FSU's 85-73 home win over unbeaten Ashland. Kelser finished the week with 47 points, 11 rebounds, four assists and two steals while making seven-of-15 (46.7%) threes and six-of-eight (75%) free throws.

SOUTH DIVISION PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Jake Van Tubbergen - Grand Valley State

Grand Valley State senior forward Jake Van Tubbergen posted a double-double for the second straight game (17 points, 11 rebounds) to lead the Lakers to a regional win over Cedarville. Van Tubbergen also had a pair of steals and shot 75 percent from the floor.
